He didn’t think. He just grabbed Luna, pulling her off the stretcher.

Adrenaline was pumping so hard and fast in his veins that he didn’t hear anything other than his rapid heartbeat as he dragged Luna behind the ambulance. He’d been in many emergency situations before but none like this. He’d never been shot at. It all happened so fast. The only thing he could do was crouch down as low as he could and cover Luna with his body, hoping that they would survive.

He knew the cops at the scene had to have radioed in for backup already but the pessimistic part of him knew how little time was needed for someone to kill a lot of people.

He wrapped his arms around Luna. She was shaking. They both were. He squeezed his eyes shut and kept whispering, “We’ll be okay,” over and over.

When there were no more gunshots and only footsteps, he chanced opening his eyes. Fingers tightened in his shirt, a terrified whimper coming from the girl in his arms.

His chest hurt like hell, and it felt like his heart stopped beating when a pair of black boots entered his vision.

Ace

He’d never been so scared in his whole life. He’d never driven that fast, either. When he saw the firetruck in the distance, his heart lodged itself in his throat. He saw flashes from gunshots and headed straight toward them.

As he got closer, he could see cops returning fire from behind an overturned car. Someone was shooting at them from behind the open door of the ambulance right across from them. He saw the man step out to shoot, then noticed someone lying on the ground in front of him. A firefighter. He didn’t allow himself enough time to think the unthinkable. Instead, he drew his gun and started shooting. He knew he risked the cops shooting at him, too, but he didn’t give a shit. Not when Kody’s life was at stake.

The shooter turned and started shooting at Ace. He swerved, then pulled the front wheel of his bike off the ground, using her as cover to get close enough.

With the shooter aiming at him, the cops took advantage, and their bullets forced him back behind the ambulance.

He dropped his bike back onto both wheels and steered toward the ambulance, hoping the cops wouldn’t fire at him. He didn’t have time to stop. Instead, he turned his bike and dropped her, making them slide across the ground by the ambulance.

The second he stopped moving, he saw the shooter turn toward him, surprise on his face. He brought up his gun and fired several rounds, watching as each hit its intended target, tearing through the man, and making him jerk with each hit.

His gun hit the ground first, then his body followed.

He stared into the man’s open eyes, barely noticing the blood that was quickly pooling around him. He gasped in breath after breath, gun clutched tight in his hands until he was certain that the guy was dead.

He pushed himself up, snapping his head around when he heard a rumble. He watched for a second as his brothers pulled up and then movement close by him caught his attention.

There was a firefighter who’d crawled out from wherever he’d been hiding, and he was ripping open the jacket off the one laying on the ground. He looked up and when his gaze clashed with Ace’s, he recognized him. He’d been there the day he’d crashed into their truck. He seemed to recognize Ace, too, because he pointed toward another ambulance there. It was next to a car that had hit a tree.

He was off the ground and running before the cops could shoot at him.

“Kody?” he yelled, desperation and hope in his voice.

He ran toward the ambulance. There was an empty stretcher in front of it with bullet holes in it. He felt a cold pass through him until he rounded the side of the ambulance. Two people were sitting on the ground against the ambulance, huddled together. One had his body practically wrapped around the other. Kody.

He dropped to his knees in front of them, putting his gun down on the ground and pushing it away.

“Kody?”

Kody’s head snapped up, his eyes wide and filled with fear.

“Ace?” he whispered, the tremor in his voice making Ace want to go back and put more bullets in that asshole.

“It’s okay, baby. You’re safe.”

Kody shook his head.

“You can let go of her,” he said, keeping his voice soft and hopefully soothing.

Kody looked at him with such helplessness and desperation in his eyes that it tore at his heart. His chest felt like a plethora of elephants were stomping around on it.

“Get your hands up.”

He ignored the yells, knowing full well the cops wouldn’t shoot at him when he was unarmed, or when they risked hitting Kody and the girl.
