He put his hand on Kody’s arm and the touch seemed to snap him out of his trance.

“You’re okay. You can let go of her. You’re safe. I promise.”

Kody’s hold loosened but it only made the girl whimper and cling harder to him.

A flash of movement had him jerking his head up. Cora ran past the cops who yelled at her, too, but she didn’t pay them any mind as she landed on her knees next to Ace.

“Kody,” she snapped at him. “We need her in that ambulance. Now!”

Together, he and Cora pried Kody and the girl from each other, and the second he had Kody in his arms, the world finally felt right again.

“Hey! Get back,” one of the cops yelled, letting Ace know his brothers were close.

He heard someone say, “Jace?” and then he blocked everything out except for Kody.

Kody was shaking against him. Crying. Ace held him through it.

“I’ve got you.”

“You’re here,” Kody mumbled.

“I am.”

He wasn’t sure how long the cops would let him stay seeing as they’d just watched him kill a guy, but he’d be there for as long as he could.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Kody

HE WAS still shaking. He couldn’t stop. Even with Ace’s arms tight around him. He felt safe but… his heart was hammering so hard in his chest that it hurt. Thinking was hard. Every time he tried, all he saw was Dennis falling to the ground. All the blood.

“I’m sorry,” Ace said. “I’m gonna need you to let go.”

He pulled his head away from Ace’s chest and looked up at him. He stared into Ace’s deep blue eyes, and it might have taken him a few seconds, but he realized he was looking at love. Ace was looking at him with nothing but love and concern in his eyes.

Hands wrapped around his arms and pulled him away from Ace. He didn’t understand. He felt so sluggish like he was about to pass out.

All he could do was watch as Ace put his hands up and lowered himself to the ground. It was like everything happened very fast, but his brain took ages to process it. It wasn’t until cops had surrounded Ace and were putting handcuffs on him that he reacted.

“Ace,” he yelled, trashing against the arms wrapping around him and holding him back. “No! Let him go. Ace.”

“It’s okay. He’s gonna be okay,” someone said. A man. One he didn’t know.

“No,” he screamed.

He didn’t stop fighting until Ace was put in the back of a cruiser.

“He’ll be alright.”

The arms around him finally disappeared and Kody whirled around. He’d never seen the man standing in front of him before, but he was wearing a biker vest that looked like Ace’s.

“Why?” Kody asked, wobbling as a wave of dizziness hit him.

A hand caught him from behind.

“Whoa. You alright?”

He glanced over his shoulder, finding another man he didn’t know. He glanced between the two, then asked, “Who are you?”
