“What if they sent them?” she hissed.

“I promise you, they didn’t. That, right there,” he said, pointing at Ace “Is my boyfriend. He’s the reason we survived, and those two are with him.”

He put a hand on her shoulder and gave her what he hoped was a comforting smile.

“They’re here because they want to save the girls you were with. I know you want that, too,” he said.

Luna eyed Chris wearily for a moment, then turned her gaze on Kody.

“I trust you,” she said, moving to put Eve into Kody’s arms. He took her happily, smiling as he looked down at her sleepy face.

“I would like to ask you some questions,” Chris said, stepping closer. “If you’re up for it?”

Luna nodded, though hesitantly.

“Alright. Do you remember how many girls were with you?”

“We were five there before they took me away.”

“Do you know the other girls’ names?” Chris asked, pulling out a small white legal pad and a pen.

“Sadie, Cammie, Gabriella, and Inez. She’s the oldest of us. She always took care of us.”

“Do you know their last names?”

Luna shook her head.

“That’s okay. Tell me how you got taken?”

As Luna began to talk, he tried not to listen too closely and just concentrated on the baby in his arms. It was hard, though, because the tremor in Luna’s voice as she told them about her kidnapping and how they’d been held captive for so many months made his blood boil. He just hoped Ace’s friends could save those other girls and give them all some justice for the horrible things they’d been put through.

Kody was holding the baby while Chris and Diesel talked to Luna. He was watching Kody, everything else blocked out. Every movement. Every noise. All he saw was Kody. All he heard was Kody making soothing noises to Eve.

Kody looked up, eyes finding Ace. His lips spread in a smile that had Ace’s heart pounding in his chest. Spending the rest of his life in prison would be worth seeing that smile aimed at him even just once.

He walked up to Kody and Eve, looking down at her lying in Kody’s arms. She was so small.

“She’s adorable,” he said.

“She is, isn’t she?”

She had a cute little nose and a lot of dark hair. Her eyes were closed but she had thick, black eyelashes most of the women he knew would be envious of. She was an adorable little thing.

He gently brushed his fingers over Eve’s forehead and said, “I’m glad you’re safe, little one.”

“Thanks to you,” Kody said.

Ace raised his gaze, warmth shooting through him at the smile on Kody’s face.

He shook his head.

“Saving Eve and Luna was just luck. I was only there to save you.”

Kody cocked his head to the side, giving Ace a contemplative look.

“If we hadn’t met and you’d heard those gunshots, would you have stayed at the bar? Or would you have gone to save everyone?”
