CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Kody

HE RAN when he heard a knock on his door and when he jerked it open, disappointment hit him. Not because he was disappointed to see his friends, but because he’d been hoping it was Ace. He hadn’t heard from him for hours and despite thinking that he’d be fine with sitting at home and waiting for news while Ace went into a dangerous situation, he’d found that he wasn’t alright at all. He was never complaining to his mother about her being overbearing about his job again.

Cora put her hands on her hips and glared at him.

“The fuck is going on?”

Kody cursed under his breath and stepped aside to let her and Ollie in.

They headed straight for the living room. Ollie sat down on the couch while Cora remained standing, arms crossed as she turned toward Kody.

“You gonna answer my question?”

“I don’t even know what you mean,” he said.

Cora threw her hands up and sank down on the couch, giving Ollie a look that made him scooch away from her. Kody walked to the armchair across from the couch and sat down.

“Ollie told me that your boyfriend killed the guy who tried to kill us,” Cora said.

Kody blinked at her. “How did you miss that?”

Cora scowled at him.

“That’s not why she dragged me here,” Ollie said, sharing a quick look with Cora. “The pregnant girl from the crash?”

“Luna?” Kody interjected.

Cora nodded. “Yeah. She’s gone. She disappeared from the hospital.”

“What?”

“Yeah. Apparently, she told the cop that the baby shat all over and she was out of stuff, so he went to grab some for her and when he came back, she was gone,” Ollie said with a shrug.

“They took her?” he asked in a whisper.

He dropped his head into his hands. He’d thought she was safe.

“No one took her,” Cora said with a shake of her head. “She left. She walked straight outta there on her own.”

It felt wrong. It felt all wrong. She wouldn’t have just walked out of the hospital. Not with a newborn. Not without telling him.

“She left you a note,” Ollie said. “Which is why we know. Mia told Justin who told us.”

Cora pulled out her phone and handed it to Kody. There was a picture of the note and as he read it, a wave of nausea hit him, and not because she’d written about anything awful. He just got such a bad feeling about it. Especially when she ended the note with We have to go, but I think I’ll see Evelyn soon.

“The last part is why we’re here because you told me Evelyn was the girl they took before Luna,” Cora said.

“What does she mean they’ll see Evelyn soon?” Ollie asked.

“I think,” Kody said, swallowing against the lump in his throat. “She wrote that because she thinks she’s going to die.”

Ace

Thank god for Auggie. They were parked about a quarter mile away from the location he’d given them and there was no doubt they were in the right place. Looking through his binoculars, he could see through the windows on the first floor of the building. Three young women were sitting on a mattress on the floor while one woman who was visibly pregnant was standing close by them, talking to one of the two men in the room with them.

The house looked like it was one sneeze away from falling over. The backyard was completely overgrown, and everything looked dirty both inside and outside.
