Kody leaned back in his arms, the worry making lines appear on his forehead.

“Luna walked out of the hospital with Eve, and she left a note for me in her room.”

“Why would she leave?”

It didn’t make sense. They’d been safe at the hospital. Right?

“That’s what we would like to know,” one of the cops said, stepping forward.

“Here,” Kody said, handing Ace his phone. On the screen was a picture. Luna’s note.

He read it, then read it again.

“Evelyn?” he muttered.

Kody nodded. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

Ace looked down at his bracelet, then up at Kody.

“That she wrote it because she couldn’t write what she really wanted to?”

“How do you deduce that from her using her daughter’s name?” the cop asked, her look of disbelief making Ace want to roll his eyes.

“Because Evelyn isn’t her daughter’s name. Eve is named after her, but Luna thinks Evelyn is dead.”

The cop straightened. “She thinks they’re gonna die?”

“Most likely,” Ace said.

He gave the cops what little information he did have and once they were finished writing down their notes, the male cop gave them a nod before heading out.

“We’ll keep you updated on the case,” the other cop said and gave them a nod before following her colleague out of the room.

Kody sighed and Ace wrapped his arms around him. Kody looked up at him and asked, “What are we gonna do?”

“We’re gonna get them back.”

Kody

Ollie and Cora left shortly after the cops, Cora giving him a tight hug and telling him to call if he needed her, then Ace had told him to go pack a bag and he’d gotten as far as finding the bag and putting it on his bed, then he’d just stared at it for a few minutes. Maybe ten? Either way, it was long enough for Ace to come looking for him.

“You alright?”

He turned around to see Ace standing in the doorway, a line of concern on his forehead.

He opened his mouth to tell him he was fine but all that came out was a drawn-out sigh. He closed his eyes for a second, then shook his head.

“I’m just worried. She’s out there with a newborn and she’s still a child herself.”

“I know,” Ace said and walked up to him, hands rubbing Kody’s arms.

“I just wish there was something I could do.”

“I’ve got my guys looking for her,” Ace said. “They found the other girls. They’ll find Luna, too.”

“You found them?”

Ace nodded.
