“They’re safe. In fact, I just got a text from Diesel and Inez just gave birth to a baby boy who’s quite healthy for a preemie.”

Well, that was a relief. At least some of them were safe.

Ace went and grabbed clothes out of Kody’s closet while he sat down on the bed. Ace dropped some jeans and T-shirts into Kody’s lap and he put them into the bag while Ace went to grab socks and underwear for him.

Once his bag was filled to Ace’s satisfaction, Ace grabbed Kody’s hand and pulled him to his feet.

“Come on,” Ace said, hand on the small of Kody’s back to guide him out of the room.

They went downstairs and once he’d locked up, they headed toward Ace’s bike.

“Here.”

Ace handed him a helmet that made him do a double take because it wasn’t the one he’d borrowed the other times they’d gone riding.

“What’s this?”

Ace looked at him with a blank stare until Kody held up the helmet.

“Oh. Right.” Ace shook his head. “I bought it for you. It was supposed to be a surprise, so uh… surprise?”

Kody could only blink at Ace.

He’d bought him a helmet? That wasn’t a ten-dollar purchase.

“We should get you some gear as well, but I figured the helmet was a good start. Oh, and I got you some gloves, too,” Ace said and reached into his saddlebag to pull out a pair of black gloves. When Ace handed them to him, he checked the size.

“How did you know my size?”

Ace gave him a wry smile and said, “Cora.”

The stark difference between how Ace saw Cora, how he’d felt comfortable enough to go to her and ask for this information, compared to how Ruben saw her was astounding.

He shook his head, a bit of disbelief hitting him as he looked at Ace. How could this man be real?

“Come on,” Ace said and leaned in for a quick kiss before taking the helmet out of Kody’s hand to push it over his head.

He was smiling like an idiot and when Ace flipped up his visor, he grinned right back at Kody.

While Ace got the bike started, he pulled on the gloves. He moved his fingers, bending then stretching them. Wearing a helmet and gloves felt like home somehow.

He got behind Ace and wrapped his arms around him, not caring to ask where they were going. He just held on and enjoyed the ride. There was always such a rush to riding. He’d always loved it.

As much as he liked being behind Ace on his bike, he felt a strong urge to get his own bike. He had a feeling he would really love riding with Ace.

When the bike came to a stop, he waited for Ace to turn the key to be sure that they were actually at their destination. The noise was too loud for him to hear Ace clearly. One piece of equipment he was looking forward to getting was a headset.

They both dismounted and once he’d gotten his gloves off, he took off his helmet. He looked up at the house they were parked in front of. It was decidedly pink. With white shutters and a lot of planters filled to the brim with colorful flowers.

“Uh, where are we?”

“My mom’s house,” Ace said. “She was worried, so I promised her I’d come home.”

He followed Ace into the house and a swarm of bees seemed to have taken over his stomach. He really wanted Ace’s mom to like him. Actually, no, he desperately needed her to like him. He knew she meant everything to Ace.

“Honey, is that you?” a woman shouted from the living room.

“No, I’m a robber,” Ace yelled back and tugged Kody with him into the room. “Yes, it’s me.”
