“Oh, that poor child. What happened?”

“One of the traffickers was driving her somewhere and they got into a crash. Kody and his colleagues got her to the hospital where she gave birth to her daughter, Eve.”

“They’re missing now,” Kody said, a dejected tone to his voice.

“Oh, honey,” Mom said and leaned over Ace to pull Kody into a hug. “Sounds like you could really use some of that ice cream.”

Kody’s light chuckle made Ace’s heart skip a beat.

“I think I really could,” Kody said and smiled at her. “Thank you.”

Mom sat back and pushed Ace’s shoulder with her own, making him look at her.

“I’m glad you have better taste in men than me,” she said with a wink.

“I mean, considering dad is your taste, it could only get better.”

“Rude,” she said and playfully smacked him with her spoon. “But, true.”

He grabbed a spoon for himself and leaned back on the couch, enjoying sharing a tub of ice cream with the two most important people in his life. He let them do most of the talking and only mock-protested when his mom pulled out his baby album.

“Look at how cute you were,” Kody said, turning the album to show Ace a photo of him in a baby pool with his fat cheeks and stomach rolls and a big smile on his face.

“Yes, yes. I’m adorable, I know.”

“Humble, too,” Mom quipped.

“Alright. I think it’s time we all went to bed,” he said and grabbed Kody’s hand to pull him off the couch.

Mom sighed, then said, “Very well. I can always show him the rest tomorrow.”

“Nope. Nuh-uh.” He shook his head. “We’ll be gone by then.”

Kody leaned in and said, “I think her plan is working.”

“Huh? What plan?”

He looked from Kody to his mother and the mischievous gleam in her eyes had him dropping his head back with a groan. Sneaky, sneaky lady. Making him want to move out so she wouldn’t have to throw him out.

He needed to move in with Kody sooner rather than later, anyway, otherwise those two might end up ganging up on him and two against one so wasn’t fair. Not when his mom was among the two.

“Night, Mom.”

“Night, Anita,” Kody said.

“Good night, boys,” she said, narrowing her eyes at them for a second before she headed off toward her bedroom. “Still no funny business.”

“No funny business,” Kody whispered. “Got it.”

Ace snorted and shook his head.

Kody snapped his head toward him, brows furrowed.

“So, you’ve told me everything, but you don’t tell her? Not even that you crashed?”

Ace shrugged. “I don’t want her to worry.”

Kody arched a brow at him. “You think not knowing where you are and what you’re doing is gonna make her less worried?”
