Kody gave him a mock-serious look and said, “Yes. We’re both idiots.”

Ace’s laugh was light and hearty, and he couldn’t help falling a little bit more in love with him right then and there.

He pulled Ace down for a kiss, tongue licking along the seams of his lips. Ace parted his lips, tongue meeting Kody’s in a deep kiss. He slid his fingers into Ace’s hair, groaning against his lips when Ace’s hands found the small of his back and pressed him closer.

Ace pulled back just as someone stepped out of the room they’d all been in when they’d arrived at the club.

“We’re moving out in five,” Chris said as he walked past them.

“Hey, Chris?” Ace called after him. “You got any of them bulletproof vests?”

Chris’ face contorted in disbelief. He snapped his gaze onto Kody and asked, “Did getting with you give him a brain all of a sudden?”

Kody turned his head to glare at Ace because he could only deduce that Chris meant he’d never have thought to wear someone to protect himself before.

Ace cursed under his breath, then said, “It’s for Kody.”

Chris’ mouth dropped open for a moment, then he closed it and shook his head.

“We’re not bringing a civilian,” Chris said, giving them both a hard look.

“I’m not just a civilian. I’m the only one Luna trusts.”

He would stand his ground forever if he had to. He needed to go. He needed to be there with Ace, and he had to be there for Luna. He had to find her and Eve.

Chris pressed his lips into a thin line, eyes jumping from Kody to Ace. He released a sigh, then said, “I can’t talk you out of it, can I?”

“No. Also,” he said and turned to Ace. “You’re wearing a vest, too. From now on, in fact.”

He almost expected Ace to protest but he really shouldn’t have been surprised when the man gave him such a soft look that it instantly made him go weak in the knees.

He faintly heard Chris say, “I’ll go find some,” as Ace wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him close.

“You wanna protect me?” Ace asked.

Kody nodded. “Any way I can.”

“I love you so goddamned much.”

He felt his eyes get watery and he didn’t give a shit. He was allowed a good cry all things considered.

“I love you, too.”

“You’ve already claimed my heart,” Ace said, fingers brushing through Kody’s hair. “We might as well get married and let the whole world know.”

“Whoa whoa.” Kody held up a hand. “Not that fast. I have a plan and a timeline.”

Ace arched a brow at him and asked, “Does this plan include us being together forever?”

“Yes,” he said without hesitation. He wanted to spend forever with Ace. He wanted to wake up next to the man who made him feel like he could take on the whole world with a single fucking smile. The man who loved him for who he was and not what he could do for him. The man who made him feel whole.

“Then I’m good with following the plan,” Ace said and swept down to claim Kody’s lips.

Ace

He’d never thought too much about his own safety. Which, considering his multiple accidents was probably quite obvious.

Well, he was thinking about it now. As annoying as the Kevlar vest was, he would wear it every day if that’s what Kody wanted because he wanted Kody to wear one, too. No. He needed Kody to wear one because he needed him safe. Always.
