Kody shared a look with Kaz and then they both shrugged at the same time, which led to Kaz snickering and Kody snorting out a laugh.

Footsteps echoed from down the hall and when he turned around on his stool, he saw several of the bikers heading toward the front door. A few went the opposite way. One of them was Ace who walked straight up to him.

“Hey.” Ace stepped between Kody’s legs, hands landing on his thighs. “We’re off to go get the girls now.”

“You have a plan?”

“Yep.”

“Is it a plan that’s gonna keep you all alive?” Jace asked, brow arched expectantly at Ace.

Ace threw up his hands. “I’m not the one who came up with it.”

“Good thing or they’d all be doomed,” Kaz said.

Ace pushed Kaz off his stool and the kid flailed before landing on the floor with a heavy thump.

“Ace,” Kody exclaimed.

“What? He asked for it.”

“You can’t just push kids.”

Ace blinked at him. “Normally, no. But that little shit is my buddy in crime. He gets a pass on the no-harming-kids rule.”

“Lucky me,” Kaz grumbled and kicked out at Ace’s shin.

Ace jumped out of the way and flipped the kid off.

Kaz’s laughter had Kody snapping his gaze onto him. He was lying on his back, arms folded under his head and his ankle over his knee. Ace stepped closer and put his big boot on top of Kaz’s chest and if Kody had thought he was actually putting his weight on the kid, he would’ve pulled him back, but Ace was only teasing Kaz.

“Hey! Daaad,” Kaz whined.

Jace leaned over the bar to look down at him and said with a straight face, “I thought you were an adult?”

Kaz groaned and dropped his head back on the floor.

The other bikers started to head out and one of them came over to kiss Jace and give Kaz a pat on the back before walking out.

“I don’t know how long we’ll be, but I’ll try to keep you updated as much as possible,” Ace said and pressed a quick kiss to Kody’s lips before turning and heading across the room.

Kody was left standing with his mouth agape for a moment, then he set off after Ace. He caught up with him in the hallway.

“Hey!”

Ace came to a sharp halt and turned around to face him, brows furrowed in confusion.

“If Luna’s there, then I’m going, too.”

He crossed his arms and prepared to argue his case, but Ace took one look at him and nodded.

“She feels safest with you,” Ace said. He stepped closer, grabbing Kody gently by the arms and staring straight into his eyes. “It’s not up to me whether you come or not, but you should know that it could get ugly, and we’ll definitely be breaking some laws.”

Kody swallowed hard, then pushed his shoulders back and straightened to his full height.

“I run into burning buildings for a living. I’ve seen ugly,” he said and raised his hands to cup Ace’s face. “I don’t run away from danger.”

Ace’s lips turned up at one corner. “We both run toward danger, huh?”
