I can follow him.I know I can.

I’d never read of a spell that could follow another transportation conjuring, and I didn’t have time to call my mother now.I had to follow my instincts, and trust in the true strength of the genie spell and the magic it had given me.

I spoke from my heart, putting words to a spell that had never been spoken before. My whole body transformed into vapor, moving through the wood of the floor like my men had.

The feeling was strange, almost claustrophobic in a way.But I had to push my fear aside and focus on my purpose and what I’d conjured this spell to do.I closed my eyes tight as I followed the smell of my wolves.Through the air I floated and into the sky I traveled.

They’d been taken into the woods, beyond the city.So much farther than I’d assumed. But I didn’t stop, or lose focus.I used every bit of the magic I had to zone in on the scent of Leo’s essence. His soul.

I kept flying through the air, past the trees and to the base of the mountains.I would have gasped if I’d been in my human form, but instead I focused on being laser directed. There, ahead of me was a small cabin in the woods.

The ancient…

Then I was moving up, between grimy hardwood floors.Leo was on the ground, writhing in pain.

Mason was strapped to a chair, screaming into a gag.

I materialized as fast as I could, planting my feet and blasting the witch with all the magic I had in my soul.

She held up her stick, blocking my offense and throwing it back in my direction.

I conjured a shield and blasted her spell away, knocking over the table in the corner. The sound of crashing and splintering wood seemed to disturb the old witch and she flinched.

“Stop,” she commanded, with a hand in the air.“I have questions.”

I kept my hands raised and a fire spell at my beck and call.“You kidnapped my men.”

The old crony held her walking stick in two hands and leaned forward on it.“I said that I have questions. Not that you may speak.”

Against my better judgment, I bit my tongue because I’d had a great-grandmother when I was younger, and she had a similar manner to this woman.I had to stay calm, and she would also, but it was hard.My chest was heaving with stress and my magic bubbled beneath my skin, desperate for release.

I didn’t act, though.I waited, not taking my eyes off the witch, but keeping my ears open for anything happening to Mason or Leo.They both seemed to be breathing and were close by.

The old witch conjured a chair and sat down with a groan.“Well, that was the most interesting thing that’s happened here for a long time.”

I didn’t move, though my arms were tiring from holding them in such an active position.

The witch waved her hand at me.“You may relax, child. If you answer my questions then you will be allowed to leave.”

I narrowed my eyes.“What other conditions are there?”

The witch’s eyes were a pale gray and inside the iris swirled magic I’d never seen before.“That you are honest.”

I lifted my chin.“I can do that, but I can’t guarantee you’re gonna like the answers.”

The old witch actually chuckled, then coughed.“You amuse me, child.Assuming you survive this day, you must come back and visit.”

It was my turn to be amused but I knew better than to be taken in by the appearance of a frail old woman. My great grandmother had been one of the most powerful witches of her era, even to her dying day.And she had looked like she wouldn’t be able to knock down a feather.

“Well?”I asked, glancing back at my men quickly and finding them both still alive.“Ask your questions.”

“How did you find us?”

I relaxed my shoulders.“May I also sit down?”

The witch nodded and a chair pressed into the backs of my knees.I sat because I wanted to preserve my strength and magic, in case I needed it.

“Answer my question, child.”
