I chuckled as I swatted at him. “No. Normally, we’d crate the birds to move them, but we’re just going outside, so although I can’t let him run free, I don’t want him crated. Between the people we’ll pass and the other animals, he might get twitchy, so I’ll keep him harnessed for this.”

“Does helikethat thing?”

Aw, the grumpy Gus was worried about Puff being comfortable. How cute was that?

“If he shows any signs of distress, I’ll stop. But so far? Watch.” I walked slowly to the bird’s enclosure and whistled.

Without hesitation, Puff headed my way. After I’d clipped the tiny harness around his right leg, he jumped onto my arm and rushed up to my shoulder, his favorite place to chill.

Though this time, the second he made it all the way up, he took a flying leap at Chris and landed on the top of his head.

Wide-eyed, Chris threw his arms out and stumbled back. “I…uh.” He was frozen, focused on me, twitching like he was forcing himself not to swat at the bird or make a run for it.

I tapped just above my collarbone, and in response, Puff hopped down and positioned himself on Chris’s left shoulder.

“He likes you.”

Chris swallowed, his face going pale. “Is he going to shit again?”

I giggled, and Puff chipped out happily. “Maybe, but it’s good luck.”

“For who?”

“You.”

He scowled. “That’s insane.”

I shuffled closer to them and held out my arms. “I don’t make the rules, but I’ll get him down.”

“No, it’s okay.” With another thick swallow, Chris brought his arm up and across his chest and tapped lightly on Puff’s foot. “He’s okay.”

“This should make getting photos easy. They’ll be happy that he’s already perched on you.”

“This shit is the exact reason I blocked Hannah,” he mumbled, heading to the door.

“So why are you almost smiling?” I asked as I followed him.

“I’m asking myselfthe same damn thing.”

I skirted around Chris and Puff and guided him to where the photographer had set up. It took almost no time to get a shot of the two. Both man and bird looked perfectly happy in every image. Much to Chris’s chagrin, the photo trended for the entire week, and a video clip of Puff rubbing his beak in Chris’s hair went viral with over one hundred million views. Even I watched it a few times.

Me: There’s a package on my desk addressed to Puff Daddy.

Chris: Did you open it?

Me: I’m worried about what kind of a crazy person sends mail to a bird.

Chris: Uncalled for

Me: GIF of a person laughing

Chris: Just open it. It will start to smell if you let it sit too long

Me: You ordered sand eels for him?

Chris: They are his favorite, right?

Me: How did you know?
