And fuck if the naturalness of the moment didn’t settle deep in my bones. I was still a little stunned when she snagged the bag from me, but I snapped out of it and hung her coat, then followed her to the kitchen.

“Where did you go?”

“Did you miss me?” She tipped her chin up as she set the bag onthe counter.

I propped myself up on the doorjamb between the kitchen and foyer and watched her unpack plastic containers. From this point on, I’d ensure that we communicated better, so I was going to say all the things, even the ones that made me nervous. “Actually, I was worried you might be having doubts.”

She stopped and frowned at me, her brow furrowed. For a heartbeat, she just watched me like that. Then her eyes widened and she dropped the container onto the counter and moved to me. She cupped my face with both hands. “None.” She slowly shook her head. “No doubts, Chris.”

My lips pulled up at the corners. “Good.” I skimmed the bare skin of her waist, then leaned in to cup her ass and give it a squeeze.

“As much as I’d love to let you make me come a few times, I’m starving. And your omelet will be cold if we don’t eat now.”

“Aw, Blondie. Did you pick up breakfast at Mama P’s?”

She smiled proudly and skipped back over to the counter. “You’re always doing all the nice stuff. Now it’s my turn.” She picked up the three containers she’d set on the counter. “Can you get the coffee and the utensils?”

With a nod, I shuffled closer and pulled the beverage holder out of the bag.

“I wanted to feed you before you had to be at Lang Field.”

The reminder hit me like a slap to the face. Dammit. I had to be at the stadium before noon. We had a game tonight, then an overnight flight to San Fran.

“What time do you have to leave?”

Fuck. I’d had less than twelve hours with her, and already, I had to leave her and fly across the country.

I pushed away the annoyance, committed to enjoying what little time we did have together. “Not for a couple of hours.”

Pressing her lips together, she nodded, but she averted her gaze.

“What’s the matter?”

She took a breath, and my stomach sank.

“Nothing,” she finally said, focusing those beautiful blue eyes on me. “I was just thinking about what would happen when you gotthere. Whether Dad would ask questions. And I’m worried that things could get complicated from there. I don’t want him and his stuff to mess anything up before we have time to just be us.”

“It won’t,” I promised. “I won’t let anything mess this up. And we don’t need to say anything today, Avery.”

She blinked at me, a little line forming between her brows. “You don’t want people to know about us?”

I set the coffee on the counter and cupped her neck. Beneath my palm, her pulse hammered. For a moment, I just soaked in how good it felt to touch her like this.

“Baby.” I dropped a kiss to her forehead. “I would scream it from the rooftop, post it on social media, tell the entire planet you are mine.”

Her lips lifted, and her cheeks went pink.

But I would own the problem that she was referring to. “All that said, I get that your dad and I have a not-so-great history. I’ve been working on it. And there are the no-dating rules.” He paused. “I think it’s in our best interest to not break the news to him today. Let’s do it together, and let’s come up with a way to talk to him without making it a big, dramatic thing. You know he’d hate that. I’m good with waiting for a bit if you are.”

The tension in her shoulders eased, and the worry lines around her eyes smoothed out. “Are you sure you don’t mind?”

“He hates drama, Avery. So let’s not be that. We can deal with it after the road trip.” I pressed a quick kiss to her lips.

She smiled against my mouth, then pulled back and skipped to the sofa with our take-out containers in tow.

I followed her, watching as she sank onto the sofa. As I approached, she tracked my movements, her gaze raking down my chest. When it dropped lower, she wet her lips.

My chest swelled. I’d never get sick of turning my girl on.
