“Should we go in?” she asked.

“Hallie’s not a fan of the spotlight,” Rhett explained, jerking his head toward the cameras flashing on the other side of the lobby doors.

I drew my arm through hers. “Let’s grab our seats. I have another friend to introduce you to, and I have a feeling you’ll get along really well.”

We started toward the theater doors, and I caught Rhett’s eye as he followed us. He was grinning, and I knew how he felt, because my heart was doing the same thing. We were clouded by a little feeling called love, and it was enveloping us completely.

And I couldn’t wait to see what the future held.

Epilogue

“Can you drive any faster?”I asked, drumming my fingers on the dashboard while Rhett navigated down the steep hill. Brake lights blurred ahead of us in the rain, but the windshield wiper was doing a good job of keeping the window clear.

“Only if you want me to get a ticket,” Rhett muttered. “You realize she already had the baby, right? We aren’t going to miss anything if we’re there two minutes later.”

“I’mexcited.” We’d been in LA when Charlie went into labor, and the weather was so awful that planes hadn’t been taking off. So Rhett and I threw our things into his car and took the eight-hour drive up to Sonoma County—which had turned into an eleven-hour drive thanks to the rain. “I can’t wait to hold that little boy.”

“Just don’t get any ideas,” he said. “I need to put a ring on that finger first.”

I wiggled my left hand. “It’s looking awfully bare, isn’t it? Actually, speaking of weddings, how do you feel about Maui?”

“I love Maui. Have you swum Molokini Crater? Breathtaking.”

“Not yet...but I’ll go with you sometime if you’re interested.”

He shot me a smile. “We agreed to at least a year of dating, Beth.”

“I know. It’s just hard to wait.”

“It’ll be worth the wait.”

I sighed. “Ugh. Agreed.”

He pointed at me. “And don’t book anything yet. We’ll need Adalyn’s help if we want to plan it right and avoid the media catching word.”

We’d had this conversation so many times, it was really funny that he thought he had to remind me of that again. We finally pulled into the Kaiser parking lot and ran into the hospital, taking the elevators up to Charlie’s room.

The nurses were surprised to see us, but they didn’t make a big deal out of Rhett, which I appreciated. We got our visitor badges and followed the directions down to Charlie’s room. She was lying in bed, her face pale, a little bundle of blankets in her arms.

Liam sat on a chair beside the bed, running his fingers over the baby’s downy cheek.

“He’s here!” I said quietly. Emotion bubbled in my eyes, and I couldn’t help the way my heart squeezed. “Can I hold him? I’ll wash my hands.”

“Bathroom is over there,” Charlie said, her voice hoarse.

“Have you chosen a name?” Rhett asked when I came back in the room, drying my hands on a paper towel.

“William,” Liam said. “But we’ll probably call him Will.”

“After Liam?” Rhett asked.

“Probably for Fitzwilliam,” I said.

Charlie looked up at me quickly, her eyes wide.

Liam narrowed his gaze at his wife. “Why do I have a feeling this is somehow Austen-related?”

“You love the name too,” she reminded him.
