“Who can I speak to about tickets?”

“We’re sold out tonight, but you can find the tickets online for tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow I have to work. Is there anyone I can speak to about getting up there tonight? My mom has—”

“Don’t tell me,” she said. “Your mom’s favorite movie isSleepless in Seattle?”

A rock fell clear to the pit of my stomach. “Well, as a matter of fact—”

“Save it, lady. We don’t allow anyone to enter without a ticket. If we’re sold out, we’ll be at capacity at all hours.”

“But surelyoneperson won’t make that much of a difference. I’m willing to pay extra!”

She raised one black eyebrow. “Are you trying to bribe me?”

“No, of course not.” Though it wasn’t off the table. I was willing. “I meant that I’d pay more for any special tickets.”

“We’re completely booked. Try again tomorrow.”

“But—”

She turned away from me and allowed three more people to enter the building. “You’d best leave before you cause a scene, ma’am.”

“Can I speak to your supervisor?”

The woman spun back to face me. Her eyebrows were raised. “Youcan, but I guarantee she won’t tell you any differently.”

Defeat swept through my shoulders swiftly. They weren’t going to change their policy for me. It was fair that they couldn’t make exceptions. Occupancy laws were for safety, and that was hard to argue. Defeated, I crossed the street. It would be impossible to grab a good shot of the building this close. From down here, you could barely tell what building it was. But I could get a selfie with the top of it for my mom and tell her what that blurry tip in the top corner of the picture was.

When I finished, I pulled up Rhett’s text thread and sent him a message.

Me:Finished my errand earlier than expected. If you still want that haircut, I can be there in fifteen minutes.

His reply was nearly instantaneous.

Rhett:That would be great.

I started back toward the subway entrance. It looked like a hot bath and takeout were on the menu for tonight. After the high pace we’d set over the previous few weeks, I wasn’t going to complain about spending my night off resting.

By the time I reached my room, gathered my things, and found Rhett’s room, we were going to be cutting it close.

I knocked at Rhett’s door and slipped inside when he opened it for me.

“That was quick.”

“We need to hurry.”

He hovered near the door, blocking me against the wall. “If you don’t have time—”

“It’s not me who doesn’t have time. You need to be leaving soon. But I’m not too worried about it. Haircuts don’t take me very long.”

He looked uncertain.

I lifted my hand as if swearing an oath. “I promise I will not sacrifice quality in any way.”

Rhett took my hand and lowered it, zapping me with heat. “I wasn’t really worried about that.”

I swallowed, ignoring the zing. It was really hard, but I managed. “Why the hesitation, then?”
