Miss Texas cackled. “You’ll do great!”

“Thank you.”

She turned back to Rhett, and they resumed their conversation.

My phone buzzed in my lap, and I pulled it out.

Rhett:You stepping out on me?

Me:I didn’t realize we were in the ’50s.

Rhett:I didn’t realize you were still looking at other men.

Good heavens, was he jealous?

Me:Dancing isn’t looking at other men. Going out with ADALYN is completely innocent.

Me:Besides, we haven’t had any conversations about exclusivity.

Rhett:I didn’t know we had to.

Me:Neither did I.

Rhett:So we’ll talk later then?

Me:That depends on how enthusiastic I am, right?

Rhett chuckled.

I put my phone away. I didn’t know why, but something about that conversation felt like a win.

Chapter Nineteen

After we returned from therodeo, I set my phone on the bed next to me and watched it, waiting for the screen to light up with a message from Rhett. I predicted that it would arrive in less than thirty seconds, because that seemed to be the pattern.

I understood the importance of keeping our relationship—whatever it was—a secret from as many people as possible, because of how complicated Rhett’s status and life were, but that didn’t stop me from feeling a little bit edgy while I waited for him to text me. The system we’d fallen into of leaving the group, returning to our rooms, and then him texting me when the coast was clear was beginning to feel slightly less romantically mysterious and bordering on sneaking around.

But I wasn’t a mistress. So I shouldn’t feel yucky.

Besides, Iwantedthis. My entire goal when I agreed to this charity tour was to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime chance of being around my lifelong crush, but fate had other, betterplans for me. I was going to accept this gift with grace and enjoy the time I had with Rhett.

What’s the worst that could happen? Rhett would lose interest, and I would have to walk away? I was into the guy, but I wasn’t psychotic. I never planned to tie him up and force him to share spaghetti with me like the dogs inLady and the Tramp. I wanted to do my best to make him fall in love with me, and I knew I wasn’t there yet. I was a lot farther along than my rational mind had believed was going to happen, though.

It turned out dreams could come true. But now I found myself in the middle of that dream, and I realized it didn’t feelexactlyas I expected it would.

Don’t get me wrong, Rhett was amazing. But sneaking around was starting to grow old.

My phone buzzed. A little over thirty seconds, but I’d been close.

Rhett:Meet me at the car?

Me:Dress code?

Rhett:Casual.

Me:Let me guess. We probably won’t be seen.

Rhett:Probably not, but you never know.
