I laughed. I couldn’t help it. Ava always had the ability to pull me out from myself.

“That only happened with your Ken.”

“Anyway.” She shimmied her shoulders. “You’re now working for your mom again. You remember how you wanted to take over her company one day? Well, here’s your big chance to finally put your dreams first! I, for one, think this is extremely exciting and the best thing that could have happened to you to be honest.”

I was lucky enough that my mother didn’t hesitate to hire me at her firm again. She held no grudges that I chose love the second time around when it came to my dating life. All she wanted was for me to be happy. Now, my father, on the other hand? I felt his disappointment the second I told him I was moving in with Kyle.

Although he allowed me to make my own choices when it came to big decisions, he hadn’t said much since I moved back into my old bedroom a few weeks ago. My mom was adamant about me living with them until I figured things out independently. To be fair, my dad still worked at all hours of the day.

You know how they say women marry a man like their father…? It was undeniably like that for me. Kyle was the opposite of my dad, but Elias was cut from the same cloth. They both had too many similarities. Maybe that was what it took to become a multibillionaire, and I just didn’t get the memo soon enough.

“Honestly.” Ava smirked, gesturing all around her. “Your circumstances are really not that bad in the bigger picture.”

“Which is what?” I genuinely asked, confused.

“You’re not marrying a cheating douche who’s probably going to end up bankrupt for running Ponzi scheme after Ponzi scheme to continue his secret life of drugs and hookers and keeping up with the Joneses.”

“You really need to stop watching Netflix documentaries.”

She shrugged again. “It’s like a rabbit hole I can’t pull myself out of.”

I narrowed my gaze at her. “I thought you liked Kyle.”

“I liked Kyle because you liked Kyle.”

“Since when?”

“Since he made you move and leave everything you’ve ever known to be with him, and I only got to talk to you via FaceTime. At least Elias didn’t make you do that. He knew how important your own life was. He never tried to change that. If anything, he encouraged your independence.”

“You’re really bringing Elias into this?”

“Maybe…”

I could sense her hesitation. “What?”

“Nothing.”

“That’s not a nothing tone. Say it.”

“Fine. As much as I’m sitting beside you on the we hate Elias Sinclair bus, I think after you broke up with him, you lost that spark inside you, Capri. I’ve known you since we were eleven years old, and your determination and drive to succeed were like nothing I’d ever seen before. It’s insane because you’re literally a trust fund baby who doesn’t want her trust fund.”

“Ava—”

“Do you know how admirable that is? You wouldn’t have to work another day in your life if you didn’t want to. Not only that, but money has never been important to you. Despite your family owning private planes and every other luxury under the sun, it never changed you. And at one point, you wanted that life with Elias. To be that power couple.”

I intently listened to her, knowing she was right.

“Don’t let another person take away everything that makes you, you. The biggest difference between Elias and Kyle is that Elias never wanted you to mold into his life like Kyle did. You were like a trophy to him.”

“Elias may have not wanted me to mold into his life, but he definitely wanted me to take a back seat to it. At least Kyle put me first sometimes.”

“Yeah, well, Elias made you put yourself first.”

Before I could reply, she persuaded, “You know what we should do?”

“I can’t imagine what.”

“We should go to the bar in town tonight. We need a girls’ night out!”
