She bowed her head exactly the way he did, and the shame was obviously eating her alive too. And for a split second, I actually felt bad for her.

“You know what they say,” I viciously spewed for only her. “How you get him is how you lose him. Now get the fuck out of my house.”

Basically stumbling over her own two feet, she quickly beelined it to the door.

However, I stopped her dead in her tracks when I declared, “You know what?” I cocked my head to the side. “On second thought, stay. You two deserve each other.”

With that, I turned to leave, but again, at the last second, I spun back around, and before I could think twice about it, I gripped Kyle’s shoulders and kneed him right in the balls.

With a loud groan and a shriek by her, he dropped to the ground by my feet, and now…

Now I could leave.

CHAPTER TWO

CAPRI

“When you think you’re first falling in love, just then you realize you’re falling out of love.” —David Grayson

“Damn,” Ava stated, suddenly standing in front of me at my parents' house with her three-month newborn, Hayley, in her arms.

I’d sunk into the lounge chair by the pool earlier that day and hadn’t moved since.

“Oh… how the mighty have fallen,” she teased, trying to get a smile out of me.

“But if you had to fall anywhere, your parents’ multimillion-dollar estate in this small-ass town in Texas is not a bad way to drop, if I do say so myself.”

I chuckled despite feeling like a total loser. Ava got married right out of high school to her high school sweetheart. It happened a little sooner than they probably would have liked but getting pregnant definitely sped things up for them. She was happily married, though, and they were still very much in love with each other.

They used to give me hope.

Now, I didn’t believe in love.

At least not for me.

“Ava,” I wholeheartedly sassed. “I’m a thirty-two-year-old woman who moved back into her childhood home with her parents because her fiancé cheated on her. It can’t get any lower than that.”

“I mean…” She casually shrugged. “When you put it that way?—”

“I’m literally a cautionary tale.”

“It could be worse. You could be pregnant or have a baby on your boob like I do right now.”

“Hey.” I half smiled. “That’s my goddaughter under that blanket eating.”

“She thinks I’m her personal cow.”

“You are.”

She frowned, whining, “I know… I’m definitely going to need a boob job after this one.”

“What? You have great boobs.”

“They’re not as perky as they used to be, you know? Now you, my darling… you have a great rack, and those titties are going to get you back on the market in no time. Plus, you have this juicy ass. You’re like the entire package wrapped in the redheaded version of Barbie.”

“Barbie had Ken.”

“Yeah,” she reaffirmed. “And we all know about Ken and his G.I. Joe ways.”
