“No. You were hired by me.”

“That’s not what his file says.”

“Charles is my silent partner. You won’t be dealing with him as he wants to remain silent, so I hired you for me.”

“Why did you use Mr. Ferris’s name then?”

“I figured it was the only way I’d get you here.”

“And knowing that, you still tricked me. I guess you’re still as selfish as ever.”

I was fully aware this wasn’t going to be easy, but nothing in life that was worth it ever was, and I was prepared to fight with anyone who got in my way at having her in my life.

Even her.

“Beauty—”

“Stop calling me that.”

I mocked, “Or what?”

She scoffed. “Why am I here?”

I didn’t hesitate in retorting, “You’re the best, and I only work with the best.”

“I haven’t worked in two years.”

“It doesn’t change the fact that you were once the best.”

“You know nothing about me.”

“On the contrary, Capri, I know everything that matters.” I watched her, gauging her reaction. “Including that you still can’t handle your liquor.”

She gasped, and getting an actual reaction out of her caused me to grin.

Her eyes lit with anger. “It was you?” she bit, glaring at me.

“Your one and only.”

“How did you?—”

“I bought the bar and was there on opening night.”

She jerked back. “You’re the new investor?”

I nodded.

“Wow… I can’t… I mean… why?”

“Why what?”

“Why did you buy a hole-in-the-wall bar?”

“Don’t ask questions you’re not ready to hear the answers to.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means I buy investments that mean something to me.”
