CHAPTER NINE

CAPRI

“The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” —Audrey Hepburn.

After he handed me the signed contract, I spun around to leave, but he caught my wrist, stopping me. In an instant a spark of electricity sizzled through my skin, and it was not what I was expecting. Even after all these years, the hurt and the memories of what could have been held me captive as I desperately tried to shove them away. All it took was for him to touch me one time and they piled on my head.

Our connection wasn’t something I could ever ignore. Trust me, my body’s reaction to him was another emotion I wasn’t prepared for.

Instead of succumbing to him, I yanked my arm back and snapped, “Don’t touch me.”

The bastard actually had the brass balls to grin, knowing exactly why I was warning him. I didn’t know how long we stood there with a power struggle raging between us.

For some reason, I just had to know at that moment and blurted, “Why did you buy that bar?”

“I already told you. I invest in things that mean something to me.”

“Why would that bar?—”

“I’ll tell you what.” He cocked his head to the side. “When I think you’re ready to hear the truth, I’ll answer any of your questions. Until then, you need to go home and pack. Our flight leaves in three hours.”

“Our fli?—”

“Or I could buy you new clothes in New York. Maybe some dresses that require you to actually wear a bra.”

“What the hel?—”

He lifted his finger, silencing me. “That wasn’t a question.”

Inhaling a deep breath to maintain my calm composure, I articulated, “The flight to New York doesn’t leave until tomorrow morning.”

“Change of plans; we leave in three hours.”

Once again, I didn’t allow his words to get to me. I knew he was only doing it on purpose to prove he was the one in control.

“You can’t just change the itinerary on a schedule I made for you without discussing it with me first. That’s not how this works.”

In a conniving grin, he backed away from me with the contract in his hands to leave the room.

Raising the document in the air, he countered, “On the contrary, Miss Locke, you're mine now.”

With that he turned and left, and I reluctantly went home to pack. Because he won this round…

Elias-1, Me-0

We sat in Sinclair’s private jet three hours later, and I was in the seat farthest from him. With everything that had happened in the past twenty-four hours, I needed some serious space. The following week would be jam-packed with press interviews, and there would be no time left to discuss us.

Thank God.

The last day had already been hard enough. It was probably the hardest day I encountered since I found cheating Kyle screwing his secretary doggy style on my satin bedsheets. The timing was shit, seeing as I didn’t want to keep remembering the past, and there I was, trying to avoid it like the plague in concern with the man who I could feel staring at me from across the sixty feet between us.

I was used to private planes. My father owned three. Yet, at that moment, it felt like he was burning a hole in my skin.

“Miss Locke,” the stewardess questioned, bringing my attention to her.

“Would you like some cherry Hint water and white cheddar Cheez-Its?”
