Finding the strength, I needed from deep within myself, I sat up and shoved him away much to his disapproval. He watched me grab my cell phone from my purse as I made my way out toward the balcony. I shut the door behind me, craving a moment to myself after the bullshit he just pulled.

We were even now, and it was only a matter of time before he’d be in the lead again. Shaking off the uncertainty of what just happened between us, I called Ava.
She answered in one ring, “Oh man, how bad is it?”
“Ava, he’s absolutely ridiculous,” I complained on the phone, looking at downtown, New York. “He’s gone too far this time.”
“This time? You just got back together with him.”
I snapped, “We’re not together.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Do I need to get a boyfriend to get him off my back? Oh! He knows about Kyle.”
“I mean, that’s not really that surprising.”
I bit, “What?”
“Well… Kyle probably runs in similar circles as Elias, so… he probably found out that way.”
“But he knew he cheated on me too.”
“Yeah, that’s kind of weird.”
“And now, we’re literally sleeping in the same suite and there’s only one bed.”
“Oh wow… you’re a one bed trope now. By the way, did you read the newest romance novel by?—”
“Ava, this is not the time to discuss smut.”
“It’s always time to discuss smut.”
“You’re not helping.”
“What do you want me to say? It’s not like you didn’t know this was going to happen.”
“No, actually I didn’t.”
“Capri… let’s be honest with ourselves. Somewhere inside you, you had to have known this man was going to try to get back into your heart.”
“No!” I exclaimed. “I honestly thought this would remain professional.”
“What part of you two have been professional up until this point, other than you accepting the job. You’ve literally been messing with fire the second you walked into his office yesterday.”
“Why are you taking his side, Ava?”
“I’m always on your side, Capri. I’m just trying to be the voice of reason.”
“So, what? Now I’m screwed?”
“I mean, yeah.”
“Ava, we broke up years ago. It’s been over between us.”
