“I didn’t leave you. You left me long before I broke it off with you.” She shoved me, but I didn’t move an inch.

“Be careful what you wish for.” I caressed the side of her face, brushing her hair back with the back of my fingers. “How are you feeling this morning? You really need to learn how to handle your liquor, beauty.”

“I can’t believe you’re going to act like what you did isn’t a big deal.”

“I promised you I’d make you my wife one day, and I intend to keep my word to you.”

“I know in your deluded mind you think that this is normal and we’re truly in love and engaged, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it’s a bald-faced lie.”

“It’s only a matter of time until you’re Mrs. Sinclair, Capri.”

“Over my dead body.”

I caged her in with my arms on the sides of her face and leaned in close to her mouth. “What’s happening between us is just fucking foreplay, sweetheart.”

“I didn’t know foreplay involved my kneeing you in the balls.” She lifted her leg, but I blocked her advance.

“You’re being unreasonable.”

“Which part of me is unreasonable, Capri? What’s unreasonable about me saying something I should have said years ago? What’s unreasonable about me claiming what has been, and always will be, mine? You.”

“You can’t do this to me. What do you want from me? I can’t forget the empty promises and coming in last in your life. I put up with it for years because I thought what you promised was truth when it wasn’t. It was all lies and bullshit. I can’t just let it go like you expect me to. I’m trying to remain calm and be professional with you, but you’re making it really damn hard for me not to hate you.”

“I know, beauty. I fucked up. I was young, and I didn’t see what I know now. And that is, no matter how much money I make, how many businesses I own, how much success I obtain, it doesn’t mean a damn thing without you. I’d give it all up for you, Capri. I’ll spend the rest of my life proving that to you. Please let me.”

I wasn’t a man who asked for anything, and I’d get down on my knees and beg for her forgiveness if that was what it took to get through to her to see my sincerity...

“It’s so easy for you, but you made me feel like I was nothing to you for three years. How am I supposed to forget about that? Yes, you were building this empire, but at no time did you make me feel like I was your queen. I can’t get over that. You’re expecting me to just forget and believe everything you’re saying, but I don’t trust you.”

“I’ll earn back your trust. You weren’t the only one grieving the loss of our love. I lost you too.”

“Then why did you give me up so easily? If you loved me so much, why didn’t you fight for me?”

“Do you honestly think I’m that much of a heartless bastard? You don’t think it killed me not to see you? Not to hold you? Not to be with you?”

“As a matter of fact, I do!”

“I’ve never stopped being yours.”

“You were in love with ambition and success. That’s who you were in bed with, and don’t you forget it for one damn second.”

I needed to catch my bearings and compose my thoughts, having to step away from the situation before it escalated to the point of no return. I couldn’t control my emotions when it came to her.

I couldn’t think straight when she glared at me with so much hatred. I despised not being in control, and the longer we stood here at a standstill with each other, the more I realized I’d surrender to her if I had to.

“You just keep on lying, but now you’re doing it with the whole world at my expense. I’ll play my part in your ridiculous game, but don’t think for one second that I’m actually marrying you. We can keep this charade going until you launch your new company, and then we’re done. You can make up whatever lie you need to about why we didn’t work out. After all, you’ve proved to be nothing but a liar.”

I jerked back, and she used it to her advantage, moving away from me. I did the only thing I could at that moment. I let her think she was winning.

When, in reality, I wouldn’t lose her again…

And I had no problem proving that to her.
