To prove his point to me, he softly massaged my thigh. The worst part was it was comforting. I was incredibly nervous. Despite whom my parents were, I wasn’t fond of being the center of attention, let alone answering questions about my personal love life. Especially when this was all one big, fat lie.

The last thing I wanted was to mess anything up by offering the wrong response. It was obvious the questions would be geared toward our relationship. Elias was playing the role of the perfect fiancé and soaking up the affection, never stopping his gentle caress on my skin under the table.

A few times, he got close to my upper inner thigh. Of course, he noticed, squeezing my leg to prove that his touch still greatly affected me. Elias never did interviews like this. However, you wouldn’t think that by how relaxed he was, like this was suddenly his comfort zone.

“Capri, how’s it feel to be engaged to your college sweetheart after all these years? Did you ever think it would happen? Have you thought about him during your time apart?”

“Elias will forever be my soulmate,” I replied in one breath, trying to sound as secure as possible. “Our time apart doesn’t change that. He was my first love, and I didn’t believe love at first sight existed until I saw him. From that day forward, we were inseparable, and neither one of us would have it any other way.”

“What about your fiancé? Did you love him too?”

“I thought I did,” I honestly reacted. “I think a huge part of me was trying to fill the void Elias left behind.”

He squeezed my leg in a reassuring gesture.

“I can understand that. Plus, he turned out to be not the greatest fiancé. I can’t tell you how much I love that Elias Sinclair was there to pick up the pieces. He turned out to be your real-life hero.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Well.” Elias grinned. “She’s always been the only heroine in my life.”

We spent thirty minutes answering more questions.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Pretending.

Question after question was thrown at us. The more personal it was, the easier Elias answered. Talk about the pressure to play the part of the supportive, loving fiancé. We portrayed the perfect couple, the ultimate couple goals. I could already envision all the hashtags created just for us.

“Mr. Sinclair,” Jenna asserted. “How’s it feel to be engaged to your publicist?”

He reached for my hand, bringing it up to his mouth. He kissed it, smiling only at me. Fully aware I was dying inside, he did it to ease me again, but it had the opposite effect and only made me feel worse that we were pretending to be something we weren’t and never would be.

“Beauty has always been the highlight of my life. Her attention to detail makes her the best at what she does, and as the world knows, I only work with the best.” He eyed me up and down, narrowing his loving gaze at me. “However, it’s the look in her eyes, the sound of her voice, and the way she smiles at me and says my name that I look forward to the most about spending the rest of my life with her.”

The sincerity in his tone messed with my head.

Truth?

Or more lies?

“It didn’t surprise me that she became number one in her field. Capri Locke can do anything she puts her mind to, and I’ll always be her biggest fan. Bottom line, she was made for me.”

“I see you keep referring to her as Beauty.” She smirked. “Is that your nickname for her?”

He nodded, and his intense stare still hadn’t wavered from mine as if they were suddenly fused together.

Was he saying this to me or to them?

Nonetheless, we couldn’t tear our stares away from one another.

What’s happening?

He tenderly smiled, reminiscing right in front of my eyes.

I swallowed hard, slightly gasping. Like her, I hung on to his every word. Waiting for what he’d say next.
