“You’re the cause of everything that went wrong in my life,” she viciously spewed, cocking her head to the side.

I leaned forward, close to her lips. “Well, sweetheart, you’re the only cause of anything right in mine.” With that, I stepped back, taking her along with me.

I held her close to my chest to steady her movement. Our chests rose and fell as one. Her eyes shifted to my mouth, licking her lips. She was baiting me to kiss her.

Instead, I spoke the truth, “I can still taste you.”

The consuming look in her eyes was so intense I could barely stand it.

“Beauty, I lov?—”

Capri immediately paled, and it wasn’t from what I was about to express. She shook her head, causing her expression to harden right before my eyes as she suddenly looked behind me.

Before I could turn and see who caught her attention, she declared…

“Kyle.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

CAPRI

“I wasn’t expecting you. I didn’t think that we would end up together. The single most extraordinary thing I’ve ever done with my life is fall in love with you. I’ve never been seen so completely, loved so passionately and protected so fiercely.”—This Is Us

“Well, well, well… if it isn’t my ex-fiancée,” a familiar voice snickered in front of me.

Elias’s head whipped around, and he came face-to-face with a very pissed-off Kyle. It wasn’t like he didn’t deserve the negative press he was receiving from Elias’s podcast interview, where he shared with the world that Kyle was cheating on me. However, by Kyle’s mad expression, he didn’t seem to think so.

My surprised stare shifted from Kyle to the woman standing beside him, Amber…

But that wasn’t what piqued my curiosity; it was the fact that she was looking at Elias with familiarity and wasn’t sitting well with me. I instantly saw the looks she was giving him.

Kyle didn’t waver in the least. He immediately spewed without an ounce of remorse on his face, “You ruined my life!”

Elias remained calm. “This isn’t the time or place.”

A bigger crowd gathered around us, and for the life of me, I couldn’t move my feet. They were glued to the floor beneath me, aware that I needed to get to the bottom of why Amber was still eyeing Elias with such sincerity.

What the hell?

“Actually, this is the perfect place for me to put you in your place. Does she know?” Kyle insinuated.

“Excuse me?” I jerked back as if he smacked me across my face.

“Oh, come on, Capri, you can’t actually think I loved you. I thought you were smarter than that. Didn’t you see I was just using you? You fit the perfect mold of what I needed as a wife. Marrying you would have furthered my career, and that was the end of it. I never loved you.”

He was deliberately trying to hurt me, and I refused to give him the satisfaction.

“What’s worse is what he’s going to do to you, and I never thought you would be so dumb to fall for it!”

“I was obviously dumb enough to fall for you. What are you more pissed about, Kyle? The fact that I caught you cheating on me. Or the fact that I’m engaged to the man you’ll never be? I cared about you, and because of that, I’m not saying every shitty thing I want to say to you, like you’re trying to do to me. I didn’t do anything wrong. What you’re doing right now is just embarrassing yourself more than you already have.”

“With him?” he snapped.

“I’m not going to stand here and defend my relationship to you. I don’t owe you anything. You seem to forget I was the one you took for a fool, not the other way around.”

“Says the woman who jumped into bed with the ex a few weeks after?—”

“After I caught you with Amber? Now take a step back before you say something that you’re really going to regret or before you piss me off more than you already have.”
