“What did he tell you?” He ignored my warning. “You’re his only one, or you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. Or wait, I got it, that he could make you forget about your pain? Right? Poor little rich girl. Everything you wanted to hear, wrapped in a big red bow.”

The crowd listened to our every word, and I knew I’d regret this tomorrow once it hit the newsstands, but there was no way in hell I would let him talk to me that way.

The nerve of that man.

“You don’t know him. You don’t know anything about him.”

“No, it’s you who doesn’t know anything.” He stepped toward me, getting a few inches away from my face, looking me up and down with a snide glare.

He scoffed in disgust, and I could feel Elias hanging on by a thread. His temper was looming, and it was only a matter of time before he let it explode. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t appreciate that he was letting me handle Kyle on my own and wasn’t trying to be my hero.

“He’s going to leave you too without so much as a goodbye… just like your daddy did to you.”

My hand swung toward his face by the time he had the last word out, but Elias saw my intention and gripped my wrist midair. He abruptly stepped out in front of me, placing me right behind him.

Elias cocked his head to the side, and I could physically feel the heat searing off him.

“You better back the fuck up, Kyle, or you’re going to be dealing with me,” he sneered in an eerie tone as I watched with my heart in my throat.

Some of his colleagues and bodyguards tried to intervene, but Elias stopped them dead in their tracks with a stiff finger in the air. My mouth dropped open, and I looked nervously around me.

Amber’s expression mirrored mine as she watched the scene unfold in front of her. For some reason, I felt bad for her. I knew I shouldn’t, but I did.

“What game are you playing, Elias?”

“That would imply that I don’t know what I’m doing. This is your last warning to leave. I won’t tell you again.”

“Well, I’ll be damned. Aren’t you just her knight in shining armor? You’re a modern-day hero.” A combination of anger and hurt came out of him in waves.

Elias walked over to him…

Each step precise and calculated.

Each stride more unnerving than the last.

His conviction never hesitated right in front of me.

He didn’t care who saw.

He was a man possessed with his heart on his sleeve, and I waited, holding my breath with my heart on mine.

But Kyle didn’t give one shit when he viciously snarled, “She doesn’t know, does she?”

“Know what?” I found myself asking.

His glare shifted from him to me before he added, “He didn’t tell you?”

My heart hammered in my chest, and I found it hard to breathe.

“Don’t worry, I have no problem telling you the truth.”

It all happened in slow motion.

One second, Kyle was revealing, “Amber used to work for Elias. Now why don’t you tell her how she wound up in my office!”

I gasped, stumbling back.

Never expecting Elias to cold clock him in the face, sending Kyle to the ground in one hit.
