“More like everything fell in line, beauty.”

“And what if Kyle ended up being the man I thought he was? Would you have really left me alone?”

He thought about it for a second. “If I thought you were genuinely happy, yes, I would have ended it there.”

“Even if that meant you ended up alone?”

“Capri, I’ve been alone for most of my life. I’m used to it.”

I frowned. “I’m sorry. I didn’t?—”

“I don’t want your apologies over something you had no control over. We’re all dealt a hand of cards, and some of them are shittier than others.”

I wanted him to know I understood where he was coming from.

“But look how far you’ve come…”

He sadly smiled, repeating, “But look how far I’ve come…”

Needing to know, I asked, “Do you ever think about your parents?”

He shook his head.

“Do you wish things could have been different?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

With all the sincerity in his expression, he spoke with conviction. “It wouldn’t have led me to you.”

I smirked. “Did you buy the bar for me?”

“No. I bought the bar for us. Consider it another gift, birthday beauty.”

“How many gifts are you planning on giving me?”

“As many as I need to make you love me again.”

“So it’s a bribe?”

“Sweetheart, I’m a businessman. I don’t come to the table without bringing something to it.”

“You just have the right answers to everything.”

“That’s what makes me the best at what I do.”

“You know, humbling yourself wouldn’t hurt… I’m just saying.”

“Come here, my wife.”

My stomach fluttered, and when I didn’t move fast enough, he laid the documents in the seat next to him and grabbed my wrist, pulling me toward him to straddle his lap. He pulled my hair back, away from my face, rubbing his thumb along my pouty lip.

“What do you need from me? Huh?”

“I thought I was telling you.”

“No… you’ve been baiting me. I don’t like playing games.” He smiled, lifting up my chin. “I love you.”
