“And we love him and knew he’d amount to great things.”

“Give it time. I promise it’ll all work itself out.”

“I’m trying. I love you, Mom.”

“I love you more.”

It was exactly what I needed to hear. Ava was right.

It did help to hear her admit it to me.

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

ELIAS

I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day —The Notebook

Mr. Locke put his hand on my shoulder for a second. “You look good, Elias. Happy.”

I nodded, feeling his encouragement in the same way I did ten years ago.

“It’s all due to your daughter.”

He knowingly nodded. “I would hope so.”

“I haven’t been this happy since before I left for London, and I want you to know that I don’t go one day without regretting how I handled things between her and me.”

I could tell he was considering what I was saying and thinking about his response. Almost as if he was trying to see if I was lying.

“You meant a lot to her.”

“I know. She means everything to me, and she always has and always will.”

It didn’t surprise me when he replied, “And why should I believe that? How can you prove that those aren’t just words to get my daughter back in your life?”

“The only way I can prove anything to you is by my actions, and I have every intention of doing so, sir.”

He sipped his drink before adding, “At the end of the day, it’s not my choice on what is best for Capri. If she believes in your word, then I do too.”

I scoffed out a chuckle. “You know, your daughter is a lot like you.”

He smiled. “You mean stubborn and strong-willed?”

“Something like that.”

He laughed, “I knew I always liked you for a reason. Not many men will call me out on my bullshit.”

“I mean no disrespect.”

He waved me off. “I know.”

“You know money has never made me happy. I can’t remember a time when I’ve taken a moment to realize everything I’ve accomplished in only ten years. I’m always thinking of what happens next, how do I keep this going, how do I make more… it’s never enough.”

“It never is.” He nodded. “The higher you climb, the harder you fall.”

“Don’t I know it.”

“Capri is a lot like me, but she’s also a lot like her mother. If Autumn and I could forgive each other, I have no doubt the two of you can as well.”
