“There always is.”

“He basically placed Amber in Kyle’s office to make sure he was good enough for me.”

Her lips parted. “I was not expecting you to say that.”

“Did you know he bought this bar? I’ve been wanting to ask you so bad about that. When I think back on that night, I can’t help but remember how excited you were that I was going out, and you made sure I dressed nice. Almost like you were wrapping me up for him.”

It was her turn to swallow hard. “I did know.”

I sucked in a breath.

“I didn’t know he was Oasis Corporation, Capri. However, I did know he was the new investor for this place.”

“How did you know?”

“His team reached out to us for the marketing.”

“Oh wow, I didn’t know that.”

“I should have told you, but I wanted you to figure out what he meant to you on your own. I just gave you a little push to figure that out.”

“He didn’t tell me this bar was your client.”

She shook her head. “It’s not. I turned it down.”

“Mom… you didn’t have to do that.”

“Honey, you’re my girl. I wasn’t going to cross that boundary by taking him on.”

I didn’t hesitate to give her a big, tight hug. “Does Dad know this?”

“Of course.”

“What did he say?”

“He agreed with me, but they’re exchanging words now, and I’m assuming they’ll discuss it.”

“I can’t believe you guys are so forgiving. I know how sad you were with the way he treated me.”

She pulled away. “Honey, it was a long time ago. Elias was always a complex man, and I can only imagine how hard it was for him to grow up alone. I can also understand why he felt the need to become the man he is. He and your father have a lot in common.”

“I know.”

She hugged me, confessing out of nowhere, “I’ll spend the rest of my life regretting not telling your father about you.”

It was like she could read my mind. My mom and I had always been so in tune with each other.

“I need you to know that if I could go back and change things, I would. But I was so young, Capri, and your father and I had an extremely complicated relationship because he’s my brother’s best friend. He did what he thought was right, and I did the same. I didn’t put you first, and I hate myself every day for it.”

“I know, Mom.” I hugged her tighter.

“Please don’t be afraid of whatever influence that could be making on your decisions.”

I leaned my head on her shoulder. “I’m relieved you guys are so forgiving. You mean a lot to him. He loves the both of you.”

She pulled away.

“You’re the closest thing to family he’s ever had.”
