“I feel worse than I look, which is bad,” he mutters. “Sorry, Hol. I won’t be able to go with you. Between my head and my stomach, it’s just not gonna happen.”

I place my hand on his forehead. “Beck, you’re burning up. Do you want me to get you some Tylenol or something? Can I do anything to help?”

“Nah, I already took some. I just want to sleep.” He makes a face as he leans against the door. “Damn. You look incredible, by the way. That’s a hell of a costume.”

“Thanks. Well, get some rest, okay? I’ll text you later to check on you.”

“K. Have fun.” He closes the door, and I let out a sigh.

Well, so much for my plus one. I slide my hands into the pockets of my leather jacket, then set off for the party.

I didn’t want to go to this thing alone tonight. Considering Mandi is the one throwing the party, it’s probably going to be half of her sorority, the hockey team, and the rest of the beautiful people.

Well, fuck it. I’m going anyway. I need a drink, and I didn’t get dressed up for nothing.

It’s chilly out, and while the jacket helps a little, my legs are freezing in the mini dress. It takes me about fifteen minutes to walk to the house, and once I’m there, I pause in front of the sidewalk. The attention to detail Mandi and Johanna have put into decorating the outside of the house is impressive.

The whole place is lit up with tiny orange and white lights, and fake cobwebs have been draped with care over the hedges. Big, hairy spiders are woven through the cobwebs, and skeletons hang from the edge of the porch roof.

Music drifts down to the street from inside the house, and I begin the climb up two flights of concrete stairs to get to the front door. To my dismay, Linc and Chase are sitting on the porch, with beers in hand.

I don’t look at them as I pass by, but out of the corner of my eye I can tell that they’ve spotted me. My stomach sinks just as Chase lets out a low wolf whistle.

“Hottie at three o’clock! Damn, girl. Get over here.”

Ha! These idiots don’t recognize me from Sal’s. Though I shouldn’t be surprised considering I barely recognized myself after Jasmine finished my makeup.

Linc runs his gaze along my body, making me cringe.

“Looking good there, beautiful. Come have a beer with us.”

Ugh. Yeah, that’s not happening in this lifetime. All I can think about is his girlfriend, Serra, and I want to kick him right in the balls. Though this time, it’s for an entirely different reason.

I lift my chin and keep walking, ignoring them as I open the front door.

Inside, the theme of colored lights and decorations continues. The atmosphere is dim, however, and it’s a little hard to see. Especially with so many people loitering around.

I make a beeline for the kitchen, hoping I can hunt down the alcohol.

There’s a keg next to the fridge, and people are waiting in line to fill their red plastic cups. I grab one from the stack on the counter and wait my turn.

Once I’m armed with alcohol, I squeeze my way out of the crowded kitchen and head down the hallway into the living room. It’s less crowded in here, but there’s also nowhere to sit.

Fuck.

Changing directions, I spot a huge balcony off of the opposite end of the living room. The scent of cigarette smoke and weed hangs heavy in the air, and it’s cloying. Fresh air will be nice.

I spy Mandi talking to a few other girls near the balcony. She’s dressed as a sexy bunny—no big surprise, considering her affection for rabbits.

Her costume is a fitted pink leotard, pink rabbit ears, and a white, fluffy round tail. Her long brown hair is pulled into a high ponytail, and she’s drawn a pink nose and whiskers on her face.

When she turns in my direction and spots me, her mouth drops open.

“Holland!” she shrieks, running over to me.

She grabs my hands and holds them up while she surveys my outfit, and my face grows hot with embarrassment.

“Oh my God. Holland, you don’t look anything like yourself!”
