“But—”

“Go bang his brains out, Penn,” Holly ordered, then forced a smile. “And make sure to tell him ‘thank you’ for me. It was a sweet gesture to include me as a guest tonight. I really needed some downtime.”

“He was happy to do it, and actually, it was his suggestion. It worked out perfectly since Nic is staying at your place for the night.”

“She needed some downtime too, huh?” Holly asked. “She said the baby is teething, so Fally’s taking a full-time shift while she catches up on some sleep.”

“She did. Plus, you don’t have to worry about being home to feed Miss tonight, so she can handle that for you.”

“Miss loves Nic,” Holly agreed. “I think she can sense who is a cat person and who isn’t. And Nic is.” She kissed Penn on the cheek. “Okay, get going. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

“Night,” Penn said, giving her a hug. “Enjoy your chill time.”

“Me and the five chocolate bars I intend on grabbing from the snack machine will have a wonderful evening,” she assured her. “Later, babe.”

Penn headed back to the elevator as Holly opened the door to the hotel room.

She felt a huge sense of relief as she swept her eyes over the pretty suite. It was a real treat to have a little decadence in her life for a small period of time.

Keller hadn’t put her in some tiny hovel, that’s for sure. The room was gigantic. It had a California king-sized bed, a huge flat-screen TV mounted to the wall, a bathroom with a glass shower stall that five people could comfortably fit in, and a separate sitting area.

She kicked off her heels and flopped down on the bed, sighing in bliss.

After a craptastic night of crying her face off, she really needed a little pick-me-up. All of the stuff with Eli had left her in an emotional uproar. She was still unsettled and hurt.

She’d not only lost him once; now, she’d lost him twice. Sure, the second time had been her decision, but she wasn’t sure how to go forward anymore with him in her life. It was just too much to deal with.

“Enough,” she said aloud. No more thinking about yesterday.

Going over to her little suitcase, she pulled out her black tank top and gray sleep shorts, then peeled off her dress and got into her pajamas. After tying her hair up into a topknot, she grabbed the remote.

It was definitely time for a funny movie and some snacks. She orderedThe Hangoverand charged it to the room, then went over to her purse to get her debit card. She’d just opened her wallet when there was a knock at the door.

“Penn,” she murmured, shaking her head. She was going to kick her best friend’s butt for not staying down on her floor with West, who obviously wanted to spend time with his girlfriend.

Holly peered through the peephole but didn’t see anyone.

“Weird,” she muttered.

When she opened the door, a room service cart held a to-go cup of coffee and the biggest brownie she’d ever seen in her life on a shiny, silver tray.

What the hell?

Holly looked both ways down the long hallway.

“Hello?” she called.

But she was met with silence.

Okay, this went way beyond weird. There was no way she was eating or drinking something she didn’t order from room service herself.

She pushed the cart away from the door and went back inside her room.

It sucked, because that brownie looked fucking amazing.

Unsettled, she locked the door and went over to sit on the bed, staring at the movie but not really watching. She decided to fire off a text to Penn. Maybe she’d sent over the food.

Holly: Babe, sorry to bother you, but did you send coffee and a brownie to my room?
