With love always,

Nana Bee

Tears flowed freely down Ella’s cheeks. It was hard to catch her breath. She missed that woman so dang much. Why did the good ones have to die so soon? It was wrong, it was so very wrong.

Bass took her empty glass, set it down, and gently pulled her onto his lap; she leaned against him as she wept against his collar. She’d cried so much since losing Nana Bee and if she kept finding notes like this from her, she’d never stop.

“She calledmestubborn,” Ella finally said after a solid five minutes of crying.

Bass chuckled. “You two might be tied,” he assured her as his hand rubbed up and down her back. She started to gain control over her emotions. His arms around her made her feel safe.

She was glad Bass wasn’t bringing up the abuse she’d suffered as a child. She couldn’t handle her emotions over missing Nana Bee and also think about how horrific that home had been she’d been forced to live in for years. She could face anything, but she needed a pause between breakdowns. That thought made her smile the slightest bit.

She finally leaned back and looked in the eyes of the man who was being far too good to her.

“Thank you, Bass,” she whispered, her voice raw.

“Damn, I’m into you,” he said as he cupped her cheek. Ella was a mess. She was sure she looked like a wet, puffy dog. He didn’t look at her like that though. He gazed at her as if she was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.

There was no further hesitation as he began to lean toward her. She closed the gap between them as she shut her eyes and their lips met. It was gentle and sweet . . . for a few seconds. His lips caressed hers, taking away all traces of agony she’d felt only moments before.

His fingers curled into her hair and his tongue traced her bottom lip. Lightning zipped through her and she shifted on his lap, wanting to be closer to him. She reached up and clung to him as he deepened the kiss, his hands moving with more urgency up and down her back, slipping to her side, and tracing the edges of her breasts. This was more intense than the kiss back at Nana Bee’s house.

Ella was losing all rational thought. She’d dealt with all sorts of emotion for weeks, and now desire was at the forefront. She couldn’t seem to get close enough to Bass. Kissing this man could become an addiction.

He turned and laid her on the couch, hovering over her. She opened her eyes the tiniest bit as he bent back down and kissed her again while pressing his body against hers. His desire pressed against her core and made her hungrier. She wasn’t thinking of stopping this.

He broke away from her lips and kissed his way down her neck as his hand slid beneath her shirt and slowly moved up her tingling flesh before he cupped the swell of her breast. Her nipple tingled as his palm brushed over it and she cried out in pleasure.

He moved up her jaw and kissed her again while grabbing her hip and pulling her up as he pressed down. She opened her thighs to him, feeling his thickness straining against his jeans and heating her entire body.

“Bass,” she sighed, needing much more, to be even closer.

“Ella,” he growled. He reached for her pants, and everything within her screamed yes. She lifted her hips and was ready to make love to this beautiful man.

A knock sounded on the door.

Bass and Ella froze as he lifted his head, his eyes on fire. They didn’t say a word and didn’t move. Another knock sounded. They both turned their heads, wondering who in the hell was at her door at well past midnight. It couldn’t be anyone up to any good.

“Are you expecting another visitor?” Bass asked. She was shocked to see amusement in his eyes.

“Do you think this is funny?” she asked.

He chuckled. “If I don’t laugh, I might cry,” he said as he slowly sat up. She couldn’t help but glance at the massive bulge in his pants. She’d been so dang close to seeing what he was hiding from her . . . she really wanted to see.

“Maybe it’s another guy,” she said with a glare.

He laughed as he ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t doubt there are a line of men who’d gladly show up. I also know you enough to know you aren’t that woman,” he said with confidence.

He was right of course. She didn’t know who it was, but now she was ticked off that someone dared to interrupt the most perfect moment she’d ever had. She might have to commit her first murder.

She jumped from the couch and rushed to the door, not bothering to look to see who it was before she ripped open the door. Maybe her brain was completely in a fog, and maybe she felt safe because Bass was there. She wasn’t sure why she was so reckless.

All desire drained from her when she saw her father on the other side of her door. He was wearing a big grin on his lips. He began to take a step forward, then he looked behind her and must have seen Bass. He stopped and his smile disappeared.

“Oh, I was driving by and saw your light on so I thought since we both couldn’t sleep we could talk,” her father said.

“It’s never a good idea to show up on someone’s doorstep after midnight,” she said, her voice as cold as ice. He seemed to flinch at her words. The man was either an incredible actor, or she’d hurt his feelings. After the letters from Nana Bee had come back to her she had even less sympathy for her father.
