He glared at me as he pulled his shirt on.

“Oh.” She stacked the bills against the table before folding them into her jacket pocket. “Well, this has been fun, guys.”

“Could’ve been a lot more fun,” Tanner said, smoothing his shirt down. “If we’d all been playing the same game.” He shot me another look as he zipped his fly.

“Will someone please tell me what’s going on?!” Maddy asked, tenting her fingers against the table.

“Should I say something?” he asked, shoving his feet in his shoes. “Or would you rather lie to her again?”

“Get. Out,” I articulated, shoving him towards the door.

“Lie to me?” Maddy asked. “What are you guys talking about?”

“Hey—” Tanner said, showing me his palms as I backed him towards the door. “I’m only trying to do you a favor.”

“You’re trying to get a black eye,” I said, reaching behind him for the door knob. “And God forbid I miss and all the money your parents spent on those teeth goes to waste.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” he hissed. “Not with the shit I’ve got on you now.”

I shut the door in his face and took a deep breath, hoping against all odds that Maddy wouldn’t be there when I spun around.
