“You think he’s worth it?”
“I know he is.”
He exhaled so heavily his lips flapped against the receiver.
My brows crashed together. “What?”
“I was ready to change my flight up and come back early to kick this guy’s ass, but it sounds like you’re really hung up on him.”
“I am.”
“You ever going to tell me his name?”
“It’s Quinn,” I said, deciding my charade had gone on long enough.
“Huh,” he mused. “What are the odds? Quinn what?”
“Draper,” I said, wondering if he was being deliberately dense. “The ginger accountant thing was just lie I made up to keep Maeve off my back.” He went silent for so long I feared he’d hung up. “You still there?”
“Yeah,” he said finally.
“Are you mad?” I asked, my insides coiling like a spring.
“I want to be.”
I chewed the inside of my lip.
“But it’s obviously too late to do anything but get out of the way.”
“Thank you,” I said softly, knowing he never would’ve chosen this. “I really want it to work out, and your support means so much.”
“I just want you to be happy, Maddy.”
My heart lifted in my chest. “I think that’s all Quinn wants, too.”
“It is,” he said. “We spoke earlier.”
“He called you?”
“Yeah.”
I leaned forward, desperate for more details. “And?”
“And I’m doing my best to come around to the idea.”
My shoulders dropped with my sigh.
“Obviously, I didn’t see this coming or I never would’ve forced you guys into such close proximity.”
My heart ached at the regret laced through his tone.
“But he’s the best guy I know, Maddy. Don’t tell him I said that because I plan to give him hell for a long time over this, but I do hope you guys can work things out.”
You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. I smiled as Quinn’s words warmed me from head to toe.
“Shame making my life awkward is how you’ve both found happiness, but I suppose I’ll get used to it.”
“I owe you a squeezy hug,” I said, wishing I could give him one right then.
“I told him I’d cut his balls off if he hurt you.”
I laughed. “You’re the best big brother a girl could have.”
