“You’ve already used your free pass, little one. That lie is going to cost you.”A wicked grin spread across his gorgeous lips.“Not tonight, but soon.”

A ripple of need skipped up my spine, but I lifted my chin defiantly.“Look, Nick.I’m not here to play games.I’m here for a week of relaxation with my sister.”

Though all the right words to disguise my true feelings rolled off my tongue, I couldn’t quash the dirty fantasies of playing Dom/sub games with him and Dylan dancing in my brain.

I mentally shook the erotic visions away.

Nick’s insistent questions about my experience, or rather lack of, only fed my doubts and insecurities. He and Dylan could have any woman they wanted. They probably had gorgeous, experienced submissives willingly falling to their feet on a daily basis. Why on earth was he wasting his time planting unrealistic seeds in the mind of a plain, boring girl like me?

After peeling his dissecting stare off me, Nick walked to the window and drew back the curtain.

“Speaking of your sister,” he began, gazing out at the barren cornfield.“She called the sat phone while you were asleep. They closed the airport in Omaha and had to divert her flight to Oklahoma City. She’s not sure she can make it, but thanked us for helping you.”He turned my way with a wicked smirk.“I assured her Dylan and I would takegoodcare of you.”

A toxic cocktail of arousal and heart-sinking despair singed my system.

It wasn’t fair.I’d been looking forward to our getaway all year.It was the only highlight of my life.Mellie knew how to pump me up.How to support and encourage me to survive another year of work, sleep, rinse and repeat. After our parents died, she took me under her wing and gave me strength. The fact she might not be coming made tears sting my eyes.As they spilled down my cheeks, I hung my head.

“Don’t cry,” Nick cooed, easing onto the mattress again.Cupping my chin, he tipped my head back.“I’m sure she’ll do everything in her power to get here.I can tell spending time with her means a lot to you.”

“It does,” I sniffed, clutching the sheet tighter.“I miss her.”

Nick sympathetically nodded as he softly wiped away my tears with the broad pads of his thumbs. It boggled my mind how the man could be so commanding and powerful, yet tender and caring. But the longer he gazed into my eyes, the more I wanted to lean in closer and press my lips to his.

Easing back from his touch to keep from doing it, I glanced at the open door.“Where’s Dylan?”

“When we brought in your purse, it slid off the table and some of your things fell out.We found the list of groceries you were going to buy for the week with your sister. He ran to the store for you.”

“Are you telling me you went through my purse?”

“No, we simply put everything back inside.Well, except for the list.I give you my word, we didn’t desecrate the secrets or sanctity of a woman’s purse. We know better. Also, no children or animals were harmed in the processes, and no wars were started,” he said with a smirk.

“You’re a smart ass, you know that?”I chuckled.

“So, that’s what it takes?”

“That’s whatwhattakes?”

“To drag a smile out of you.I like it.You’ve got a beautiful smile.”

My cheeks caught fire, and I dropped my chin.I wasn’t used to hearing compliments.

“He didn’t have to do that.I could have borrowed Kit’s car,” I protested.

Though I was grateful Dylan had taken the initiative to get the groceries for me, the fact they’d taken over the task was unsettling.I was used to doing everything on my own.

“He wanted to.Besides, you’re in no condition to drive.”

“Icouldhave.I feel fine now.”Nick sent me a skeptical stare.“Can you step out for a minute so I can find my robe?”

“No.I’m not leaving you alone. You already said you felt loopy.I’m staying to make sure you don’t stumble and fall.If you hit your head again, you will be going to the hospital.”

“I’ll be careful.I promise.I just need to go to the bathroom.”

“Then go,” he said, sweeping his arm toward the doorway.

“I’m not getting out of this bed naked while you’re here.”

“And I’ve already said I’m not leaving you alone.Don’t make me repeat myself again, little one.It goes against my nature.”
