Biting back the urge to yell at him for coming back to spy on me and screwing up my plans, I painted on a plastic smile.

“Thank you for saving me,” I bit out sarcastically.

“You’re welcome, darlin’.” He flashed a triumphant smile so infuriating, yet dazzlingly gorgeous, I wanted to slap him. “Iamcurious about something. Did you make up the address of that house back there, or actually know who lives there?”

“Iknewsomeone who once lived there.”

“Old boyfriend?”

“No.”

“Oldgirlfriend?”

“I’m not a lesbian, but yes, she was my college roommate and best friend.”

“Was?”

“She died. And before you ask, because I know you will, I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Fair enough.”

The empathy etching his face took the combative wind out of me. Blade was right. Though he’d literally kidnapped me, it wouldn’t kill me to pound out my dented pride, and be a little more grateful. After all, I was the one who’d lied.

“Look, I’m sorry for being so…snarky.”

“It’s all right. But I’d appreciate it if you didn’t lie to me anymore. Deal?”

“I’ll do my best, but I can’t make any promises.”

“Why not?”

“Because there are things I need to keep private,” I explained as he pulled into a parking space in front of the bank and killed the engine.

“Fine. Then say so, but stop lying to me.”

“You’ll actually respect that, and not keep prying?” I asked skeptically.

“Of course.”

“Why?”

“Because I haven’t done anything to earn your trust…yet.”

The confidence shimmering in his blue eyes told me he planned to change that. Truth be told, I ached to let him…but couldn’t. My freedom was at stake. His benevolence was overwhelming. Still, it wasn’t enough for me to bare my soul.

“That’s not true. You not only saved me, but you also bandaged me up…twice, let me take a hot shower, gave me some clean clothes, and are now chauffeuring me all over town.”

“Those are superficial things. I haven’t done enough to earn the secrets you’re keeping.” A ghost of a smile tugged his lips as he nodded toward the bank. “Will you let me help you inside?”

When Emma pensively nodded, I masked my surprise and hopped out of the truck.

Afraid of making an embarrassing scene, she refused to let me carry her in. I knew her ankle would take longer to heal the more weight she put on it, but I relented and cupped her elbow before escorting her into the bank.

After guiding her to the nearest teller, Emma faced me with a tense smile.
