I’d taken Mack’s advice and devised a new plan. It was unlike any tactic I’d ever used before, but I’d weighed the risks and chosen the lesser of two evils. Emma would be pissed, and I’d likely never see her again, but I wouldn’t totally destroy her. By sunrise, she’d probably be gone, but I’d finally have the answers I needed.

Pushing down the strange, empty ache filling my soul, I stripped and climbed in the shower.

When dinner was done, I helped Emma clean up the kitchen, then opened a bottle of wine.

“What do you say we sit on the porch for a while?” I asked, filling her glass.

“I’d love to.” She smiled.

I slipped my arm around her waist and guided her toward the door while our bare feet pattered in synchronicity over the hardwoods. After she sat on the porch swing, I eased in beside her and slung my arm around her shoulders.

Emma peered up at me with a curious expression. We’d sat together on the couch, watching movies, the past two nights, but this was the first time I’d invaded her personal space. Instead of inching away, she subtly leaned closer.

“To perfect chocolate chip cookies,” I said, lifting my wine.

“And superb steak.” She smiled, clinking her glass to mine.

After we each took a sip, Emma tilted her head back and stared up into the sky.

“I’ve never seen so many stars before. They’re beautiful.”

The raw innocence and pure awe on her face, reflecting in the moonlight, slammed me like a gut-punch. Instead of looking away, my focus locked on her tantalizing lips, and I caved to the demand to taste her sweet mouth again.

“They’re not as beautiful as you,” I murmured, skimming a knuckle down her cheek.

Emma slowly peeled her gaze from the sky, then locked her big hazel eyes on mine. “You’re pretty damn handsome yourself.”

Like a summer storm, the surrounding air grew electric. Placing my wine glass on the table beside me, I lifted hers from her hand, then set it next to mine.

“Remember that kiss we shared at the bank?” I asked, staring at her inviting mouth.

“Yes.”

“Me, too. I think about it all the time.”

“You do?”

“Don’t you?”

“All the time,” she whispered.

“I want to kiss you again,” I murmured, cupping her nape and aligning her lips beneath mine. “If you don’t want me to, tell me to stop, darlin’.”

“Don’t stop. Please…don’t stop.”

Her breathless plea went straight to my cock. Though I ached to destroy her mouth, body, and soul, I simply slid my hand in her hair and cinched the short strands in a tight fist. As she sucked in a tiny gasp, I brushed a feather-soft kiss across her soft lips. Emma clutched my shirt, then leaned up and pressed her mouth to mine. The kitten-soft moan humming against my lips made my chest tighten and my control snap.

A low growl rumbled in the back of my throat as I claimed her in a raw, hungry kiss. Emma whimpered and parted her lips. I charged inside with a greedy groan, sweeping deeply over every crevice and swell while savoring the sweet wine staining her tongue.

Mouths fused together, our whimpers and moans melded with the symphony of crickets, tree frogs, and owls hooting in the dark. Unable to break the kiss, I ate at her like a man possessed while I snaked my other arm around her and drew her closer. She swallowed my needy growl as her pebbled nipples raked my chest, then wrapped her slick tongue around mine.

Lost in the feel of her soft body writhing against me and the wet heat of her wicked mouth, my plan completely unraveled.

I didn’t give a shit.

All I cared about was getting inside the sensual woman feeding the wild, primitive flames of a fire I’d never felt before.

Mack had been right. Emma did have me tied up in knots. Not because she’d somehow snuck past my defenses and climbed deep inside my skin in a few short days. Not because I wanted to fuck her, though, I desperately did. But because, like a drug, she flowed through my veins.
