Molly tugged Sam over to join them. “Charlie needs to disappear. Any suggestions?”

Several hundred yards down the road, another car came bouncing along the muddy ruts. This one was clearly an official law enforcement vehicle.

“Shit,” Charlie swore. “Make that one minute.”

“It’s okay. We got you,” said Sam. He raised his voice and clapped his hands together. “Listen up, everyone!”

One minute was all Firelight Ridge needed.

By the time the police officer exited his car and faced the little community, Charlie was nowhere to be seen.

“Where’s the owner of this vehicle?” he asked the crowd. He was one of the better-looking law enforcement officers Molly had seen. Quite fit, attractive in a dark and smoldering way. No Sam Coburn, of course. But only one man was.

“That’s me!” Molly stepped forward. Sam stepped with her, because that was what he did now, apparently. He backed her up, no matter what, and she loved him for it from the bottom of her heart. “Is there a problem?”

“We believe it’s been stolen by a known criminal.”

“I’m not sure where you’re getting your information, but it’s my car, and it’s in my possession, so clearly it’s not stolen. You can look it up. My name is Molly Evans. Here’s my driver’s license. I happen to be a lawyer, too.”

“And she always stands up for her friends,” Sam murmured.

“You do know me,” she whispered back.

“To know you is to love you.”

For sure, no man had ever said that to her, or about her, before. Only Sam.

The officer finished his inspection of her registration and drivers license. “Are you visiting here in Alaska?”

“No, I live here now. I just haven’t gotten a new license yet.”

She felt Sam squeeze her hand. He must know that it took a lot for her to say that out loud. It made it so much more real.

“You should take care of that as soon as possible.”

“I will,” she promised. He scanned the crowd with sharp eyes that didn’t seem to miss much. They landed on Lila, still clutching the goldfish tank.

“Is that a goldfish?”

“Yes, sir. This is Goldilocks. I rescued her when someone dumped her down the drain. It was a woman whose apartment I was cleaning, and I believe she had a touch of dementia, because normally she loved Goldilocks. I fished her out of the drain and decided she wouldn’t be safe in that apartment anymore. I hope you didn’t come all the way out here because of a stolen goldfish, because I really wouldn’t call it stealing, it was absolutely a rescue situa?—”

“Okay, okay. You can stop now.” Giving in, the officer shrugged and took off his hat. “Where can I get a drink around here?”

As people directed him to The Fang, Molly met Lila’s gaze. Molly mouthed, “well done.” Lila whispered back, “known criminal”?

Molly lifted her shoulders and shook her head, just as mystified.

Apparently things were about to get even more wild in Firelight Ridge.
