On second thought, she shouldn’t be worried about that. Being seen in here with him would only solidify what might be going through Joliet’s head. Still, she would rather not have to face anyone for the rest of the night when she looked like this.

“Yo, Rondeau. Are you in there?”

Everyone knew the obnoxious tone of Tommy Burnett’s voice. Tully cringed at the sound of it, because she knew ifhewere to come in there and see them together, she would for sure never hear the end of it.

Maybe she would stay here until everyone else left—or at least find another way out.

“The door’s locked,” Nathan whispered, low so that only she could hear it and Tommy was none the wiser. Tully, afraid he would hear her, just kept her mouth shut.

On the other side, Tommy was talking to someone with a distinctly feminine voice she couldn’t make out.

Holding her breath, she waited as Tommy knocked a few more times, then after a minute or so, he said something about Nathan not being there and moved on. She exhaled and looked at Nathan again.

He was already smiling again, and his grin was frustratingly contagious.

“Maybe I should sneak out of here,” she said, keeping her voice low in case Tommy or someone else was still listening outside the door. She was only half joking when she said it.

“And how do you plan on doing that?”

Tully looked around, from the door then around the room looking for any other exit. Her attention landed on the window, and she stood up to walk over. In the dark glass, her reflection looked much better than it did before as she cupped her hands against the glass and peeked outside. Nathan’s room was on the second floor, so the distance from his window to the ground was high, but nottoohigh.

She gauged the drop while Nathan gauged her, an amused beam on his lips that she pretended she couldn’t see through his reflection. “Trust me, it isn’t as easy as it looks.”

“Oh? And you know this from experience?” She looked down again. Okay, maybe itwasa little too high up. Not high enough to kill her, but high enough to seriously injure herself.

Too focused on how much damage she would cause to her ankles if she tried to jump onto the ledge of the roof, she hadn’t realized that Nathan stepped closer to her so he could also look out the window.

“Does that surprise you?”

She jumped, his voice louder than she expected. Her head spun and when it did, she realized just how close Nathan really was.

About a foot of space was in between them, and the smirk on her face dropped as her surroundings became fully apparent.

His expression was softer, more content.

She pretended to think about his question, like her mind wasn’t caught on something else. “Not really.”

His lips. Her attention had been drawn 100% to his lips.

Oh, right.

She had come here specifically for those lips.

The initial goal had been to kiss him, which she had abandoned in lieu of the new opportunity to disappear away with him, but now . . . the kiss idea was back in her head.

What was the likelihood of Nathan Rondeau telling Tommy that he kissed Tulsa Harding in his bedroom, and in return, Tommy spreading the news to the entire town?

Joliet was already going crazy down there wondering what was happening—Tully knew it.

However, the cherry on top would be a third party informing her that everything she feared happened, hadindeedhappened.

Tullythoughtshe was sober enough, but she might not have actually been sober.

There was a buzz in her head as the alcohol began to take over her common sense, and she had definitely been staring at Nathan’s lips for ten seconds, wondering what she should do.

Since she hadn’t decided, she stood completely still.

Even her breath sat apprehensive in her chest, waiting for some sort of answer whether it should release or burn there forever.
