From behind me, I hear Enzo let out a snort. I give him a glare as well. He only offers me a smile, which drops when Maximo turns around to look at him.

I never did get the full story on what happened with the cum and blood situation. As quickly as the thought comes, I remind myself now isn’t the time to bring it up.

“Giovanni, would you like to explain your thought process?” Vito asks slowly, giving his friend the benefit of doubt despite the frown on his face.

Giovanni gazes at him for a moment too long and I decide that he’s most definitely drunk.

Interesting.

Finally, he seems to shake himself from the trance, sitting up. “It’s simple,” his words aren’t quite as crisp as usual, and maybe I didn’t get to snag a drink, but a drunk Giovanni just may be enough entertainment on its own. “I can’t fight a man who doesn’t even realize we’re fighting.”

It makes sense in a way, but with the way Giovanni’s eyes flutter closed slightly half way through the sentence…

“You want to see where Maddox is,” Vito tries to interpret his words, “You want to know if he’s aware of what is going on?”

“Esattamente,” Giovanni points a finger at him.

“Did anyone ever hear anything back from Diamond?” Lucia asks, her fingers creeping along the desk to retrieve the scotch bottle again.

I don’t think anyone is sane enough to try to stop her, until Giovanni snatches the bottle from out of her reach, narrowing his eyes at her, “Mio.”

“Selfishstronzo.”

Lucia always uses Italian to curse, but I have to wonder if maybe liquor makes the rest of the family switch languages as well.

“Diamond,” Lucia says, reminding us of her question.

“He has yet to reach out,” Giovanni says with a shrug, his gaze moving to me. “He hasn’t paid you a visit at the club has he,Inverno?”

“Inverno?” The word doesn’t roll off my tongue the same way it did with Giovanni. I turn a questioning gaze on Lucia.

“It’s your name in Italian,” Lucia says, amusement creeping into her eyes. I think she’s the only one enjoying Giovanni’s change of character as much as I am.

“Sounds a lot like inferno, which is the opposite of Winter,” I say, squinting.

Vito sits forward, catching my attention. He rubs his jaw. “Could we all stay on topic?” There’s tension in his words and when he sends a worried look in Giovanni’s direction, I wonder how rare an occasion it is for Giovanni to get drunk.

“You’re such a party pooper, Bianchi,” Maximo says with a snort.

Vito ignores him. “Winter, has Diamond made contact with you?”

“No.”

He eyes me warily. “Are you sure?”

“I have no reason to lie,” I tell him, feeling slightly irritated. I’ve put my trust in the family, despite my better instincts. The least Vito can do is show the same trust.

He opens his mouth as if he’s going to say something but nods. “Okay, then Giovanni your plan doesn’t sound nearly as insane as I thought.”

“One person a piece,” Giovanni says after a moment, his eyes drifting closed again.

“One person what?” Vito asks, leaning closer to the desk.

“Solo una persona in più per parte... può venire all'incontro.”

Everyone in the room goes still and I look around for any indication as to what Giovanni said. All I know is everyone in the room seems to be tense as hell.

Crazy, I finally get invited to sit at the grown-ups table, but they gave me a menu that’s impossible to read.
