“Why only two people per group?” Lucia asks, cutting the silence.

“È l'affare.” Giovanni says and I watch as he rubs a finger along his temple. “I have a fucking headache. Enzo, medicinale.”

I turn just as Enzo leaves the room. I can interpret that Giovanni wants him to get him medicine for his headache, but the rest I don’t understand.

“What did he say?” Again, I look at Lucia to interpret.

But it’s Maximo who answers, and it's clear from his tone that he isn’t happy. “He agreed to a deal for them both to only have one other person at the meet. Clearly, Dox will bring Diamond. And my brother will take-”

“Inverno.” Giovanni cuts him off and once again tension cuts through the room.

My heart drops into my stomach. “Please tell me he really said a fire this time, and not my name.”

No one offers me a response and I know that I’m fucked.

“Why in the hell would you take Winter?” Maximo asks in irritation.

Giovani doesn’t offer a reply, simply looks at his brother, who looks right back.

Jesus.

Vito rises to his feet as Lucia continues to watch on in amusement. “I think we’re going to let you sleep on that,” he says to Giovanni, since clearly the man is done communicating like a grown up.

A bit of disappointment moves through me, because drunk Giovanni seems like he may be fun, but Vito is firm as he starts making everyone get up to leave the room. Maximo opens his mouth to argue but Lucia grabs his arm before he can get started.

“I will make sure that Enzo brings you water with your medicine,” Vito says to Giovanni as he deftly swipes the liquor from Giovanni’s fingers.

Giovanni glares at him.

Vito ignores him, opening the office door and gesturing for us all to get out. Enzo is coming down the hall, a few white pills in one hand and a bottle of water in the other. I guess he was thinking the same thing as Vito.

He passes by us and it seems like a pointed decision when he doesn’t spare Maximo a glance.

Which is maybe why Maximo sticks his foot out, and since Enzo isn’t looking at him, he doesn’t see it coming.

My eyes go wide as Enzo goes tipping forward, heading right for me.

I try to move out of the way, but I don’t stand a chance as his big body goes flying forward. I see the moment he realizes what’s happening because he tries to change direction to avoid me but there’s no time.

A large breath whooshes from my lungs as I hit the ground. Somehow, Enzo manages not to land on my leg, but his body is still heavy on my abdomen.

“Maximo!” It’s Vito who yells and I watch as he tries to pull Enzo off of me.

Enzo does his best not to push off of me, putting a hand beside my head as he muscles himself to his feet.

My body doesn’t hurt as much as I expected, just my back where I landed. I have to wonder if it’s because I’m so used to extreme pain: being stabbed in the leg, having water suffocate my lungs.

Lucia kneels beside me. “You good, Winnie-Pooh? You went down like a bag of rocks.”

“I’m good,” I tell her, taking my time to rise. It’s only then that I’m aware of the scuffle going on in the hall.

Holy hell, this space is not big enough for this chaos.

I look up as Vito struggles to pull Maximo and Enzo apart, failing miserably.

Lucia rolls her eyes before slowly picking up the pills now on the ground. She places them and the bottle of water in my hand before rising to her feet. My eyes widen as she pulls her gun. She aims it right at the scuffle before jerking it to the side and letting a shot off.

Everyone goes still like they’ve been hit. But the bullet hole is in the door that leads to the basement.
