I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, but I’m leaning toward the latter.

Dox’s eyes move over Giovanni and he shrugs his shoulders. “Why would I? Clearly, you’ve already decided I’m guilty if you’re trying to get my son on your side, telling him lies.”

My stomach drops as disappointment moves through me.

Diamond isn’t on our side.

Again, Lucia had been the one to keep me informed, letting me know that if Dox knew about the plan it meant Diamond had gone to him and he couldn’t be trusted. I’d hoped that wouldn’t be the case, because despite not knowing him all that well, I like Diamond.

I like the idea of havinganotherbrother.

But just like my other one, this one has failed and betrayed me.

And it fucking hurts.

“Unlike you, I haven’t told any lies, Dox. I told your son the truth,” he looks down at me, his gaze intense before he looks back at Dox, “and your daughter.”

I press my lips together as I look at Dox, waiting for his reaction. He leaves me disappointed though because his expression doesn’t change one bit. It remains cold as steel as he looks at me. And he doesn’t deny Giovanni’s words. He has to know there’s no way to continue to run from the truth.

Instead, he tells another lie as he watches me. “I didn’t kill your mother, Giovanni ordered Vito to do it.” Again, that little evil smile is back. “Ask him, makehim tell you the truth,” he says.

Again, my heart is erratic in my chest and there’s something in Dox’s gaze that scares me.

When Diamond came to me saying that the Costas killed my mother, he’d spoken of a similar situation. He’d said Vito was the one to kill my mother. I’d once tried to ask Lucia, but I had been interrupted. Now, I know she wouldn’t have known the answer either way.

And I hadn’t asked Giovanni, but now… now I know Ineedto.

Because the coroner’s report may have been real, my mother may have been murdered. But the report doesn’t say who did it. And suddenly doubt is moving through me.

Did Giovanni manipulate me yet again? Did he also kill Diamond’s mother?

Their reports had been nearly identical, they definitely had the same killer.

A slight chill runs down my spine.

“Ask him, Winter,” Dox’s voice is firm and when I look at him, his face is serious.

Inhaling a breath, I turn to look at Giovanni. His face is closed off but something about the way he meets my eyes directly lets me know that I need to hesitate before I ask my next question.

Vito would never look at me the way he does if he killed my mom on Giovanni’s orders, would he?

But I know better, the people in this world are cruel and inconsistent. The way that Giovanni was assuring me he would save me before we came in here and now he’s looking at me like a stranger, that’s a prime example.

So I swallow before I ask, “Did you order Vito to kill my mother?

There isn’t a single change in his face as he looks at me and I think that’s why I don’t see him moving. Why I don’t see him pulling his gun, why I’m not aware of it until the gun is being pressed against my temple.

His other hand comes up to the side of my neck and he squeezes and I look up at him in shock. But nothing is more surprising than the single word that comes out of his mouth. “Yes.”

CHAPTER TEN: WINTER

Should I be surprised?

Yes.

Am I?

No.
