I click the safety off, pressing the barrel right in the middle of his forehead.

His dark eyes stare up at me, blank, and it only pisses me off further.

I dig the barrel into his skin. “How does that fucking feel, Giovanni?” I ask, my voice not sounding like my own as I see red. “Does it feel like your life will be over with one wrong twitch?” I bare my teeth at him, leaning forward as I hold his gaze. “How does it fucking feel?”

“Fanculo, she’s snapped.” The words belong to Lucia but I don’t turn to look at her, keeping my gaze locked on Giovanni.

“Tell me how it feels!” I damn near beg him, my eyes burning.

“Winter,” the voice is close and it takes me a moment to realize it’s Vito. I can feel his presence at my back, his warmth.

I lean forward, wrapping my hand around Giovanni’s throat in the same way he’s done to me so many times and it feels amazing, it feels powerful. Not removing my gaze or my grip, I bring the gun behind me, pointing it in Vito’s general area.

“You shut the fuck up,” I tell him, “You’re just as bad as him, apparently.”

“What?” The confusion in Vito’s voice is clear.

“You took the order from him to kill my mother!”

“What? I don’t know what you’re talking about, Winter.” His voice softens and it sounds like he’s trying to persuade a child as he says, “How about you calm down and we-”

I squeeze the trigger.

The shot rings through the air.

“Fucking hell!” Lucia.

“Shit.” Enzo.

“Didn’t see that one coming.” Maximo.

“That’s Enough.” Giovanni.

The gun is pulled from my hand so hard that it jerks my arm. Pain slams into me but I still try to fight. Giovanni pushes mehardwithout any remorse. I collide with the ground, hitting my shoulder. As quick as I hit the ground, I’m being pulled off of it. I’m yanked to my feet and then my hands are being pulled behind my back. I look up to find Giovanni, my captor once again. His hands have both of mine clasped together behind me, his body pressed tightly against mine, his jaw clenched.

He turns his head to the side slightly to see behind him. “Are you okay?”

“Just barely,” Vito says and I try to look over Giovanni’s shoulder to see him, but I can’t.

He definitely doesn’t sound like he’s been shot to me.

“Well, hell Enzo, looks like you’re still dodging bullets,” Maximo says, his voice dry with humor.

Giovanni shifts to the side slightly and I seek Enzo out. He’s standing a few feet behind Giovanni, his jaw tight. Not even a foot from him, there’s a bullet hole in the wall.

“The contractor is going to buy a new car with all the holes in the walls he’s been fixing around this place,” Lucia says, rubbing her jaw. She turns to look at me, raising a brow. “Didn’t think you had it in you, Winnie-Pooh.”

The pride in her voice is clear.

Giovanni moves until his body is pressing even harder into mine. “It’s time that everyone shut the fuck up so we can talk,” he says and his eyes move back to me. His grip on my wrists flexes. “You’re going to listen and be still or I’ll handcuff you. Do you understand me, Winter?”

Instead of answering him, I lift my chin up.

Anger flashes in his eyes but there’s something even hotter under the look that gives me pause.

“What could you possibly think I did that would justify you trying to kill me?” Vito kills the moment and when I look up to find the sadness in his eyes, I have to tell myself that I didn’t do anything wrong.

Theydid.
