I switch my attention back to Giovanni. “Why did you say that in front of Dox then?”
His head whips in my direction. “Because you asked if I ordered Vito to kill her and Idid.Remember Winter, I’m not a liar. You didn’t ask if he actually killed her.”
This makes as much sense as a chicken fucking a cow.
Giovanni knew exactly where my mind was going to go and yet he’d still played this little stupid game with me.
Right when I thought that we were done with the cruel lies and evil intentions.
I should have known better.

Giovanni’s gaze flickers over me and something flashes in it before he pulls his arms over his chest. “And plus we needed it as a distraction for Dox. Now he doesn’t know whose side you’re on. Your hurt and anger were clearly real when I told you the truth. Without a doubt, he’ll be sending Diamond to seek you out soon.”
Lucia’s eyes move over GIovanni, her brows pulling together. “So Diamond chose his side then?” she asks.
Giovanni jerks his head in a nod. “Dox already knew what we were there for. It’s why the meeting was so short, things escalated quickly.”
At the mention of Diamond, that same hurt is back and I squeeze my fingers together. “Diamond wasn’t actually at the meeting, so maybe we still don’t know whose side he’s on.”
Giovanni scowls, “Please, Winter, don’t be gullible. Your brother chose his side, he didn’t need to be there to make that clear.”
I don’t like the way he speaks down to me like I’m an idiot for having faith in my brother. I mean, look at his own brother and the way he still holds faith in him no matter what psychotic thing he’s doing.
I turn my gaze away from Giovanni.
“We’re going to be on alert for the next couple of days because I have no doubt that Dox is going to try to make a move,” Giovanni says. “So Winter, you’re not going to leave the house for the next few days,” he says simply.
My jaw slackens and that damn anger is back again as I shoot to my feet, wincing. “I just got permission to leave the house again, I don’t want to be stuck again,” I snap.
I just managed to get some sort of freedom and now he’s saying I’m going back to being trapped in my room all over again, it’s complete bullshit.
On top of the rest of the shit he’s already pulled tonight.
Giovanni is not amused from the clenching of his jaw, but frankly I don’t care as I stare at him head on. He presses his lips together before looking at the others. “Leave us.”
Enzo and Vito don’t argue, making themselves scarce, though I don’t miss the look that Vito spares me, hurt still clear in his face. And now that I’m looking at him, guilt is trying to overwhelm me, but I ignore it.
Lucia and Maximo linger a little longer. Maximo studies the bullet hole before turning a look on me, a mix of amusement and confusion in his eyes. “Okay, so maybe I understand why everyone is still so pissed about me shooting at Enzo’s head,” he says after a moment.
Lucia puts a hand on his shoulder. “Does that mean you’re going to apologize now, cousin?”
He scoffs, “Of course not.” He pats a hand along my shoulder, “Don’t worry, mouse, I understand,” he says before heading in the direction of the front door, Lucia on his heels. “We’ll see if we can find anything on the streets.”
From his tone I feel bad for what he finds.
When they leave, silence sits between me and Giovanni. He studies me closely. “I understand you’re pissed,” he says after a moment, and I can’t believe he gets out of his head long enough to acknowledge that I should be angry.
“As it is, you agreed to fight this battle with us and it’s not going to be easy, and frankly you're not going to understand where I’m heading with most things, but you have to trust me.”
Trust him?
Yeah fucking right.
