Okay, so we’re going to try to dodge the elephant in the room apparently.

“Got stabbed.”

“You’re a glutton for punishment, aren’t you?” A muscle twitches in his jaw. “Did one ofthemdo it to you?”

I don’t have to ask to know thatthemis the Costa Family. The hate between Diamond and the Costas is very much mutual, despite the fact that they saved Diamond’s life not too long ago. Though I don’t know the full details of what happened, I’d seen Diamond in the infirmary, bullet wounds in both his shoulder and his leg.

“No, Sheffield,” I tell him.

“No shit. Sheffield York.” He blows out a cloud of smoke, reclining his head back. “He smoked?”

“Smoked?” I squint. “Yeah, he’s smoked.” I say after I think about it for a moment.

“The Costa cousin?”

“That’s not important,” I tell him, tired of putting off our conversation for much longer. We’re here to talk about being siblings, not Lucia or any of the other family members. “We need to talk about our father.”

Diamond flinches at the words, he can’t hide it. The tightness to his face returns and he taps his free hand on his leg.

“I know what you want to talk about, I just don’t know what you want me to say, Winter.”

“I want you to say that you believe me. So many times you told me, begged me to believe you, to trust you, and now this time I’m asking you to do the same. When you told me we were cousins, I believed you. When you told me the Costas killed my mom, I believed you. You were only half right about one of those things and wrong on the other, and yet I believed you, so believe me.”

Diamond presses a finger to the bridge of his nose, blowing out a deep breath. “Winter. Even if that is true, what do you want me to do? You want me to turn on my father because he fucked his sister and lied about who you are?”

My jaw clenches and I have to inhale a breath of my own to fight the feelings that threaten to come to the surface. I’ve known the truth for days now and I’ve had time to process it, had time to decide what I want to do about it.

About Diamond.

I know that I can’t bullshit him, I have to play a true hand and give him my exact thoughts. “Your relationship is already fragile with him. You know it and so do I.”

“And so do the Costas,” he gives a humorless laugh. “Let me guess, they wanted you to come to me with this information to see if you could get me on your side, see if you could get me to help, what, start a war against my father.”

“Yes.”

Diamond seems shocked by me coming out with the truth.

“I’m not going to lie to you,” I tell him. “That’s exactly what they want.”

He rises to his feet, pacing the floor between his desk and the glass table. “And you’re going to play right into their hand and help them out, yeah? That’s fucking stupid. Not to mention that I still haven’t even said that I believe you.”

I unzip the purse that I wore today just for this moment. Diamond watches on as I pull papers from my purse and hold them out to him.

“What the fuck is this?” he asks, snatching the papers, his eyes moving from side to side as he reads over the paper.

“Proof.” I tell him. “That’s my DNA against your DNA. Giovanni says they couldn’t get DNA off of Maddox, so they had to go for the next best thing. You.”

His lips part slightly as he looks down at the paper, the disbelief clear on his face.

“How in the fuck did they get my DNA?” he asks, shaking the papers so hard I expect them to fly from his hand.

“When you were hurt,” I tell him simply.

When Giovanni had shown me the DNA test, I’d asked the same thing. I knew there was no way that Diamond would willingly let them take his DNA. Apparently, the doctor had gotten an extra tube of Diamond’s blood when he was at the Costa’s compound recovering. And considering that they always have access to my DNA…

Well, it hadn’t been hard for them to run the test.

“Those fucking bastards.” He crumbles the paper in his hand before tossing it to the ground. “I’m going to-”
