“You’re going to do nothing,” I tell him.

Again, that burn has returned to his eyes as he looks down at me. He looks like he’s debating on whether to strangle me or throw me out.

“Maddox has known all this time who I was, he could have told you but then he’d have to confess to being a murderer.”

Diamond’s lips thin, a snort sneaking out. “I know exactly who my father is. The gang life don’t come without blood, darling.”

“Yeah, but at what cost?” I look dead at him as I prepare the next blow. “Your mother. What about her? Did the gang life requireourfather to kill her too? Or does he just have a hard on for killing his baby mamas?”

CHAPTER TWO: WINTER

“What did he say?”

Giovanni doesn’t let me get in the house completely before he’s questioning me. I look up to find him standing just inside the foyer. He has on one of his very prominent, crisp suits, his dark hair slicked back. There’s more scruff than usual on his face and from the pinch of his eyes, I know he’s on edge.

But I have the upper hand for once, because I have information thathewants, so I decide that I’m going to use it to my benefit.

Can’t pass up on a rare opportunity.

Running a hand through my curls, I look back at Enzo, who drove me to my meeting with Diamond. He was stationed outside in his car and while it had been brought up multiple times that more than one person should accompany me, I assured them that Diamond wouldn’t hurt me.

Which took a lot of convincing.

Not wearing a wire was the next thing that Giovanni had to be talked out of, the logic coming from Lucia. She said that if I were to be caught wearing one, there was no way Diamond would trust a single word out of my mouth moving forward. Giovanni insisted that I could set a trap for them if they couldn’t monitor me.

He’s still skeptical that I’m on their side.

He shouldn’t be.

I may still hate him, but my blood pumps to avenge my mother, a craving for blood that I never had before I came to the fucked up world of the Costas.

“Winter,” Giovanni snaps, the irritation clear in his words.

I bite down on the inside of my jaw before moving right by him. I’d caved and picked my crutches back up as soon as I got back out to the car. I lean heavily on them now as I head to the kitchen.

I can hear Giovanni’s harsh, uneven steps behind me. I relish the few moments of control, knowing it won’t be long before they end.

We’ve gone through this before, me thinking I have power for once, only for Giovanni to remind me there’s not a more powerful being on this earth than him.

Still, I’ll take what I can get.

It takes me far too long to find a cup in the cupboards, in which time I can feel Giovanni’s gaze boring into the back of my neck. Continuing to ignore him, I move over to the sink, running it. When I’m done, I bring the glass up to my mouth, turning to rest my butt against the counter.

I nearly jump out of my skin when I come face to face with Giovanni.

He snatches the glass from my hand, his eyes burning with frustration. A little of the water splashes out, droplets hitting my face, and I frown back at him.

“I don’t know what the fuck this show is, but you better cut it the fuck out now, Winter,” he snaps, tossing the glass into the sink.

It shatters and I feel bad for whoever is going to have to clean the mess, because I know it won’t be the irate man in front of me.

I tilt my head to the side, staring up at him.

Things have been a little less tense than I expected the last few days. A part of me wonders what would have happened if I didn’t believe Giovanni when he revealed the truth of my mother’s death to me. If he couldn’t get me on his side to take down my biological father.

Especially since I now know that Giovanni knew of my plans to work with Diamond to bring him down when Diamond told me the Costas were the one to kill my mother. The evidence he had had been solid.

But Giovanni’s was bulletproof.
