Just to irritate him a little more, I lean down, massaging my sore leg. I really do need to get off of it. It’s starting to ache more and more the longer I’m on it.

“Excuse me,” I say, bumping into Giovanni. The crutches click loudly against the tile as I limp my way out of the kitchen and into the little dining room.

The room is quiet and roomy. A large table that probably cost more than a year’s worth of my former rent sits in the middle of the room with matching chairs.

I drop down into one of the chairs, elevating my leg onto the one beside it. I toss the crutches onto the table, not giving a fuck about marring it.

Turning, I frown when I realize that I’m the only one inside, Giovanni having not followed me in.

I guess he’s not going to continue entertaining me.

Just as the thought moves through my head, the door slams open and Giovanni comes stomping in, Enzo silently following him.

My lips twitch and when Giovanni opens his mouth to speak, I beat him to it. “Diamond is unsure.”

I don’t know what irritates him more, the three words or their implication.

“I told you to convince him to join our side.” He folds his arms over his chest.

“Yeah, and I did my best.” I shrug my shoulders. “But he’s loyal to Dox, you know it as well as I do. The good thing is that I could tell he’s starting to doubt him. When I showed him the coroner's reports, he was at a loss for what to say.”

Until he’d told me to get out.

I hadn’t taken any offense at the venom in his words, knowing he needed time to process everything that I’d revealed to him.

I’d turned his life upside down, in a mirror image of my own.

Because when Giovanni Costa is on a mission, he comes with facts and truths too hard for the brain to process without long thought.

Like the comparison of my mother’soriginalcoroner’s report next to Corrine Hawthorne’s original report.

They had been nearly identical, and both had been replaced with false reports that showed a suicide rather than the actual homicides that were committed.

Two different coroners.

Maddox Hawthorne had paid both them and the police off to ignore his sins.

But where there’s one set of blood money, there’s more around the corner, and Giovanni Costa had capitalized on it.

“I think it won’t take too much more pushing to get him to help,” I confess, getting serious.

Giovanni’s lips pinch together before he gives a sharp nod of his head. “Good.” He looks me over and I don’t miss the way his eyes stop on my chest before moving back up to my face.

My skin warms and I shift uneasily in my seat. For two weeks now, no one in the Costa home has touched me in a sexual manner. I’ve seen the looks, the way fire torches their gazes, and yet they’ve left me alone.

I’d been surprised by how much it’d bothered me at first. Because as much as I hate it, I love the fucked up things they do to me. And the absence has been… unsettling.

Giovanni’s words bring my attention back to him. “Did anyone see you talking?”

Shaking my thoughts off, I nod. “At first, yes, we were talking inside the main part of the club, but we moved to his office before I started pulling out all the papers.” I rub my arm, thinking of the way that I’d felt multiple eyes on me in the club. “I’m sure it’ll get back to Dox.”

Giovanni waves a hand. “I’m not worried about that. Dox knows that Diamond was trying to get you to help them get to me. If anything, this will help up see where Diamond’s loyalty lies. If it gets back to Dox, he’ll ask Diamond and if we don’t have his head, he’ll tell his father why you were really there. If he’s as in the middle as you think, he’ll keep quiet and lie until he’s made his mind up completely.”

I nod in agreement, a little surprised by how open with his thoughts Giovanni is currently being.

The stoic man usually keeps everything to himself. Even the reason why I was here, I know he kept it from everyone, including his brother, Maximo, and his best friend, Vito.

It makes me wonder if maybe his view of me is shifting. Mine of him certainly has.
