His gaze flutters over to me. “Are you still in pain?”

The question is most definitely not what I expect to hear.

Hell, he didn’t seem all that concerned about my leg right after I was stabbed in it, and not when he was putting pressure on it the day he caught me snooping in his office. The day he gave me the truth I had been hunting for.

But now, there seems to be something genuine to his concern, to his question.

I nod my head, “Yeah, it still hurts.” I shrug. “I just overdid it a bit today when I didn’t have my crutches.” I don’t really want to admit the truth, because I know if I’m still having too many problems with the injury there’s no way they’re going to let me go to work.

And fuck, but I want as many options to get out of this house as possible.

Giovanni gives a sharp nod. “I’ll have Beth come take another look, make sure they didn’t miss anything.”

“I’m sure it’s not anything,” I tell him, shrugging my shoulders. “It’s still healing.”

Annoyance flashes in his eyes, bringing back the Giovanni that I'm used to. “Isaidthat I’ll call her.”

“Fine.” I know there’s no point in arguing with him. I cross my arms over my chest. “Is there anything else you wanted with me or can I be dismissed too?”

A muscle jumps in his jaw. “There you are trying to be a bitch again, but you should know that it only makes me want to bend you over my lap and spank your ass until you cry.”

Heat shouldn’t move through my body.

I know it shouldn’t, especially with the dry delivery of Giovanni’s words that let me know he isn’t intending for the spanking to be something from fifty shades of gray, but a real punishment.

And yet, there’s definitely moisture between my thighs and I have to force myself to remain still so I don’t tip him to that fact.

Running my finger along my bottom lip, his eyes follow the gesture and my face burns as I try to come up with something to say.

“What’s going to happen when this is all over?” I ask him, the words blurting from my mouth and seeming to surprise both of us as Giovanni blinks at me.

“What?” His brows pull together.

“What are you going to do with me when you’ve taken down Dox?” I know the feat won’t be an easy one, but if I had to put my money on anyone, it’s Giovanni.

There’s a deep hatred and burning for the man who’s my biological father. I know there has to be something more to it than the fact that he doesn’t like him.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have bothered with seeking me out to use against him.

Which brings me to another question. How did Giovanni orchestrate getting me into his clutches?Did he purposefully run my brother’s drug tab up just so he could bargain with him for me?

Is Dox Richard’s father too, or is it really the man who we grew up thinking was both of our fathers?

I know that Giovanni has the answers to all these questions, but I’ll save the rest for another time. What he’s going to do with me is the most important.

“You had this all worked out from the beginning, so how does your plan end?”

He taps a finger on the table, his eyes moving to the side and for a moment, I think he isn’t going to answer me, but finally he looks back at me. “My plans have changed multiple times.” There seems to be something heavy to his words, but it’s definitely the truth.

I suspect that’s why he’s so vague, because he doesn’t want to break his record of being truthful and telling me what he’s really going to do with me.

Pursing my lips, I lean forward, ignoring the ache in my leg at the movement.

“That didn’t answer my question.”

“It didn’t.”

It’s my turn to be irritated and when I see the look in Giovanni’s eyes, I know he’s enjoying it.
