“Aww, does a little heat bother you?” She coos like she’s talking to a baby.

“You know when I first saw you today, I thought you were a sweet girl, now I see you’re a heartless woman.” He shakes his head with a grin.

“Just wait until I have to dig really deep to work on your muscles like I did with Leo. Then you’ll see just how heartless I am.” She chuckles when his eyes nearly bug out of his head.

Wheeler jumps off the table and heads into the other room where the ice baths and hot tubs are located. The room is blanketed in silence as Charlie begins cleaning up. She’s completely unaware I'm in here.

“What do you need, Wyatt?”

Or maybe she isn't.

“How’d you know I was in here?”

“I always know when you’re in a room.” She doesn’t bother looking at me. Instead, she keeps putting away different things.

“My calf muscles are killing me. Is someone around to help me?”

“We both know I'm the only one here, Wyatt. Why don’t you just ask me to help you?” I don’t need to see her face to know she’s rolling her eyes.

“Charlie, will you please help me?” I close the distance between us and stop right behind her.

“Well, lucky for you, that’s what I get paid f-” The words die on her tongue as she spins around and finds me only inches away from her.

“And if you weren’t getting paid?” I arch a brow.

“Then I’d let you suffer for trying to claim me in front of half of the team.”

“No, you wouldn’t.” I smirk. Charlie likes to act tough, but I know the woman inside of her has a massive heart and doesn’t know how to let people suffer.

“Oh, wouldn’t I?”

“Nah, the Charlie I know could never leave someone in pain no matter how frustrated she was with that person. She had too big of a heart, especially when it came to me.”

She stares at me for several long seconds and right when I think she’s going to give in and let me talk to her, she shakes her head.

“That girl died a long time ago,” she whispers as she takes a step backwards. “Lay down on the table. I'm going to grab a drink, then I’ll start working on your calves.”

She steps past me and into Owen’s office. She shuts the door behind her and I know she’s taking the time to collect herself. She doesn’t need a drink, she just needs distance from me.

“Why didn’t you tell me you got a job for my team?” I mumble into the table, but I know she can hear me.

“Oh, it’s your team now? Here I thought it was Owen’s. Silly me.”

“Char, c’mon. Can we please just cut the shit and have an honest conversation?”

“Fine. You want to have an honest conversation?” She digs her fingers into my calf and I swear I'm going to jump right off of the table. She keeps stripping my muscles away from the bone and while I know this is what I need, it doesn’t make it any easier.

“Yes,” I growl through clenched teeth. I swear she’s making this hurt worse on purpose.

“Ok, how about you explain to me why you really broke up with me?”

I open my mouth to respond, but she stops me before I can. I wish we could drop this tension between us and just be ourselves again.

“Don’t lie to me, Wyatt. Leo already told me the real reason when I was torturing him earlier.”

The pain in her voice is clear as day and it’s a total gut punch. I never wanted this. I wanted her to focus on herself then we’d eventually get back together.

“I was an idiot! Is that what you want to hear? I thought I was doing the right thing by letting you go. I figured you’d focus on yourself and get your degree from a better college, which you did.”
