“I’ve still seen you every day.”

“I know, but it’s not the same. The biggest issue is I don’t know if we’ll be done with their house by the time you come back with all your stuff.”

“Daddy, it’s ok. Really. I can stay with Blake or any of the other guys. I'm not worried about it. Worst comes to worst, Macy and Wyatt have both offered me a room at their places.”

“How the hell do you think you’ll stay with Wyatt when you can barely face him without breaking?”

“I'm not breaking,” I scoff.

“You are, princess. I can hear it in your voice. Plus, you forget how much Addi destroyed me when she broke up with me.”

“You weren’t apart for that long and you still lived together.” I roll my eyes. “It’s been eight years. I’ve healed.”

“You haven’t, but that’s ok. One day you’ll figure out why Wyatt made the choices he did, and maybe you’ll find closure then.”

I'm quiet for several long seconds, trying to come up with something else to talk about. I’d happily take any change of conversation at this point.

“Holy shit,” he drawls. “You know.”

“Leo told me today.”

“Wow, I don’t even know what to say… Did you talk to Wyatt?”

“Yeah, but honestly, it doesn’t make it better. He decided to make all the decisions for us and our relationship without ever consulting me. I understand he thought he was doing it for me, but he wasn’t.”

“Yes, he was, Charlie. It might be hard to see since you’re the one that got hurt the most, but he did it all for you. He was willing to put your future before his happiness and I respect him for that.”

“You mean kinda like how Mom broke up with you and put your future above her happiness? She didn’t want you to be forced to raise a child that wasn’t yours. How is this any different?”

“Well, fuck… I don’t know. Because Mom was wrong?”

“So was Wyatt! C’mon, Dad, you can't seriously… oh my gosh!” I gasp and lift my head from the steering wheel.

“What?”

“You knew! You knew exactly why he broke up with me and you didn’t say anything this entire time!”

“Blake told me after it happened. I was about to beat the poor kid’s face in and Blake told me before I landed myself in prison.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whisper, feeling a little hurt.

“Because I wanted you to live for yourself and I was worried if you found out what he did, you’d follow him and forget all about your plans.”

“Well, isn't that my right to make my own decisions? Why does every man in my life think they can make choices for me? Maybe I am better off staying in California!”

“Like hell you are! Listen, Charlie, I get it. You had your heart broken and that sucks. But that boy never stopped loving you. I’ve watched him when your name came up in conversation. I’ve watched him when you facetime me and my phone gets shuffled around the room so everyone can say hi. He wants so badly to make up for what he did, but he doesn’t know how to. He doesn’t think he’ll get another shot with you and it’s killing him. I can't blame him either.”

“Why would he think that?”

“Because you’re his ‘it girl’and he knows it.” Dad uses the term Uncle Cole uses when he’s talking about Aunt Sammie. He always called her his ‘it girl’ because she was it for him. No one else could ever compare and he didn’t want to live with anyone else by his side.

I always found it adorable to watch Uncle Cole talk about Aunt Sammie. They were best friends and fell in love with each other long before they realized what had happened. I swear they were made for each other.

“No. That’s not true. There’s no way you could walk away from your ‘it girl’,” I whisper.

“Cole did. He gave Sammie exactly what she asked for and walked away.”

“Yeah, but that’s different. He still lived in the same house as her. They were only apart for like a month. That’s nothing compared to Wyatt and me.”
