“Yeah, but if we got married, it would all play out in my favor.” Wheeler sucks his bottom lip between his teeth and bites down. I’ve seen him do it so many times over the years and every single woman swoons when he does. Cici’s cheeks flame under the attention, and she doesn’t say a word.

Maybe I need to start watching the guys and paying attention to how they make the women swoon. I could use some pointers to get back on Charlie’s radar. I’d be willing to try almost anything at this point.

Chapter 19

Charlie

“Charlie, Cici, and I are going to the bathroom,” Macy announces as she stands from Schmidt’s lap. The two of them have been cozied up all night, ignoring the rest of the group. I’m a little surprised Schmidt’s been going along with it. He normally keeps to himself and is quite shy.

“We are?” Cici frowns at Macy. She’s been talking to Covey most of the time and they seem to really be getting along well. They look cute together too.

“Yeah, didn’t you know Macy doesn’t know how to piss without an audience?” Cord folds his thick arms across the table and narrows his eyes on Macy.

He’s been glaring daggers at Schmidt all night. I'm sure they’re going to have words tomorrow, but at least that’s kept Cord’s attention off of Covey flirting with Cici.

“Nah, I really just wanted to brag to the girls about how much sexier Schmidt is than you. And I'm fairly certain he’s hunglike a horse, but I thought that would be unlady like for me to say in front of the whole group.” She plants her hand on her hip and raises a brow.

Schmidt, the poor man, had just lifted his beer to his lips and took a long gulp. He chokes on the liquid and spits it across the entire table, spraying almost everyone in the process. Luckily, Wyatt’s huge frame blocked me from getting hit.

“Aw, what the hell, man!” Wheeler glares down at his shirt that’s now covered in beer.

“Are you ok, handsome? We don’t need you dying on us before I get to confirm my suspicions.” Macy pats him on the back.

“Macy, stop,” Schmidt says softly. He isn't trying to reprimand her or anything, but he’s clearly uncomfortable with how she’s speaking about him. I don’t blame him at all. If nothing else, she’s starting a war between two teammates and it isn't going to end well.

“Excuse me?” She takes a step back and blinks down at him.

“I’d really rather not be the center of attention and you’re making that impossible. We can only go out to a few places without getting bombarded by fans and cleat chasers, I’d rather not draw any curious looks because you’re yelling about the size of my cock. And to be honest, you can say whatever you want about Cord, but we’ve all seen each other naked. Every player at this table knows what their teammates are working with. You’re just embarrassing yourself.” He gives her a soft smile full of pity.

I blink at Schmidt in surprise. He’s sweet as can be, but I think he knows how this night is going to end if he doesn’t put his foot down with Macy. He’s really close to Cord from what I’ve seen and I'm sure he doesn’t want to be used as a pawn in this little game he and Macy have been playing for years.

Macy stares at him for a full ten seconds before she lets out a huff and spins on her heels. She marches straight to the door and pushes her way out into the cool night air.

“Ugh, can I get out so I can go talk to her?” I try to get the row of guys on either side of me to budge, but none of them move a muscle.

“Nah, I’ll deal with her. We both know this isn't going to stop until we have it out with each other.” Cord sighs as he climbs over Wheeler and follows Macy.

“Does anyone else feel like the cops are going to get called?” Cici stares at us with wide eyes.

“One hundred percent.” Leo lifts his beer and takes a long swig.

“Are we going to do anything to stop it?” The concern on Smithy’s face surprises me, but I know he’s a big softy on the inside.

“Nope,” Wyatt and I say at the same time.

We both know what it’s like to be in their shoes and sometimes the best thing you can do is let it all out. The years of frustration and hurt. The buildup of anger and hatred. It’s oddly freeing to lay everything out on the table and let the pieces fall where they may.

I think our outburst last night was exactly what we needed to move past things. I can't wait to see where the next few weeks and months will lead us.

“I don’t know why you won't take me up on the offer to stay with me,” Wyatt says as he pulls up in front of my childhood home. “You’d have a lot more privacy and people wouldn’t be poking their noses in your business.”

It’s late, but not late enough for everyone to have gone inside. Someone made a fire and it looks like there are at least half a dozen people sitting around it. Every head snaps in our direction when I shut the door to Wyatt’s truck. He does the same and follows me up to the front door.

“I haven’t been around my family for so long, I don’t really mind if they stick their noses in my business. I kinda missed it. Besides, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Look at how last night ended… You don’t need to walk me to the door, you know.”

“Yeah, but it just feels right. I’ve always walked you to the door. I’ve never let you do it alone.” He lifts his shoulder in a shrug.

“Always the romantic,” I tease him.
