One by one each couple has left the group to go back to their houses. They’ve all claimed they needed to get the kids to bed or they’re tired, but I think they’re trying to give us some alone time.

“Are you tired?” Charlie peeks up at me.

The fire is casting a warm glow across her face, making her look breathtaking. I want to kiss her so badly, but I guarantee there are at least a dozen sets of eyes on us right now.

“Not really.” On cue, I let out a big yawn and Charlie giggles.

“Are you sure about that?”

“I'm physically tired, but I know I won't fall asleep any time soon. My brain is too busy. This happens every year during spring training.”

“Do you want to watch something at my house for a little bit? Cody and Jax were going out with some friends, so they won't be there to bother us.”

“Sure...I feel like we’re being watched right now.” I glance around at the houses surrounding us.

“Oh, I guarantee it.” She giggles as she climbs to her feet and holds out a hand to me.

When we enter Wes and Addi’s house, I'm surprised to find the first floor completely empty. I know she said no one would be around to bother us, but I didn’t believe it.

“Where’s Sophia?”

“I think she went out with the boys. She’s got a severe fear of missing out.” Charlie smirks as she grabs two bottles of water, then heads into the living room.

We lay down on the couch and Charlie cuddles into my side again. It feels so natural to be with her like this. So perfect.

“How is work really going? Is anyone causing you issues?” I place my knuckles under her chin and force her to meet my gaze.

“No. It’s been better than I expected. There are some guys I keep my distance from, but for the most part everyone’s been nice and respectful.”

“Who are you keeping your distance from and why?” I'm instantly on alert. If one of the guys did anything to make her feel uncomfortable, I'm going to have a talk with them.

“No, nothing like that. I just… I follow my gut, Wyatt. And it’s saying to keep as much distance as I can from Stubbs and a few other guys. Luckily, most of them aren’t my assigned players. Ithink Stubbs is the only one. But now Owen’s removing him from my care anyway.”

“I can talk to Owen about the others. I can make sure they don’t get transferred to you.”

“No, I just plan on making sure I'm never alone with any of them. All of you said you’d make sure that didn’t happen anyway. I’ll save one of the guys I trust for last and get done with the others earlier in the day.” She lifts her shoulder in a shrug.

“I’ll make sure I stay until you leave every day,” I wrap my arm around her and drop a kiss to the crown of her head. “I’ll walk you out to your car.”

“You don’t need to do that,” she whispers.

“I know.” I slide a little lower on the couch and try to get comfortable.

“Lay on your side like we used to. It’s the only way these couches are comfortable.” Charlie stands and waits for me to move. “Dad went to the furniture store and seriously laid on every couch until he found the comfy one, he never sat on it like a normal person and the backrests suck.”

“Where are you going to lay then?” I eye her as I slowly move into a lying position.

“Um… with you? Unless you don’t want that, then I’ll lay on the recliner.”

“No!” I say a little too enthusiastically. “I mean, no. It’s fine. We can definitely lay together.”

My cheeks heat as I reposition myself and I'm sure if it weren’t so dark in here, Charlie would be able to see how red my cheeks are.

She clicks on the TV as she positions herself in front of me and tugs the blanket off the back of the couch. It rests across both of us and I'm reminded of how many times we’ve laid like this over the years.

“What do you want to watch?” She peeks over her shoulder at me, putting her lips only a few inches away from mine.

“Whatever you want, sweetheart.”
